Leicestershire sex offender’s sentence doubled following undercover police operation

A Leicestershire sex offender, convicted after an undercover police investigation, has had his sentence doubled following an intervention by the Solicitor General, the Rt Hon Lucy Frazer QC MP.

Lewis Watts, 26, engaged in sexual communication with three different 12-year-old girls via social media, including graphic messages inciting one of the girls to engage in sexual activity. However, he was in fact communicating with undercover police officers in all three cases.

Watts was arrested and charged with three counts of attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child. He was also charged with one count of attempting to cause or incite a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity, and of breaching an existing sexual harm prevention order.

As a result of his new offending, Watts had a sexual harm prevention order brought into force. The Order was granted in 2015 following his conviction for three counts of possession of indecent photographs of children, with a view to their being distributed or shown by himself to others.

Watts initially pleaded not guilty to the latest charges but changed his plea on the first day of the trial. On 28 June 2021, he was sentenced to 3 years’ imprisonment at Leicester Crown Court.

Following the Court’s decision, the Solicitor General referred Watts’ case to the Court of Appeal under the Unduly Lenient Sentence (ULS) scheme. On 1 September 2021, the Court found his sentence to be unduly lenient and increased it to 6 years and 3 months’ imprisonment.

Face of ‘serial offender’ pervert who tried to seduce young girls online

This is the face of a paedophile who sent sexual messages to what he thought was a 12-year-old girl.

In reality, Lewis Watts’ messages encouraging the girl to send sexual pictures of herself to him were going to an undercover officer with West Midlands Police.

Watts, 26, of Saxelby Road, Melton, was already a registered sex offender when, in November last year, he began messaging a person on the social media platform Kik.

Messages were sent by Watts encouraging sexual activity and asking the ‘girl’ to send images of sexual acts.

But the account was actually being operated by undercover officers from the West Midlands force, who then notified the paedophile online investigation team, (POLIT) at Leicestershire Police.

A number of conversations also took place between Watts and other similar accounts – but they too were also all being operated by officers.

Watts had already been prosecuted in 2015 for accessing indecent images of children and three years later appeared in court for three breaches of a court order in relation to internet contact with a child under 16.

He then committed more breaches of the order, resulting in 12 months imprisonment.

Despite that, in the latest offences, Watts used a genuine photograph of himself and gave his real age on his account, so the investigation team were able to track his account and on December 22, POLIT officers took action.

Later that day, Watts attended Leicester’s Keyham Lane police station where he was arrested and was subsequently charged with a number of offences.

They were three counts of sexual communications with a child, attempting to incite a child under the age of 13 to engage in sexual activity and a breach of his sexual harm prevention order. He was remanded into custody.

Initially, he pleaded not guilty and was due to stand trial at Leicester Crown Court but changed his plea to guilty shortly before the trial was due to start.

He was sentenced to three years imprisonment

June 2021

‘Very high risk’ paedophile used hidden devices to groom 12-year-old

A “very high risk” sex offender was snared by police after he groomed a 12 year-old girl online who turned out to be an undercover officer.

Paul Weekley, 61, breached a court order by using hidden devices to have secret online sex chats with the girl he believed to be a 12-year-old called Becca, Norwich Crown Court heard.

Claire Matthews, prosecuting, said Weekley was already on the sex offenders register for previous convictions for possessing indecent images of children, and under the order his online use was meant to be able to be checked.

He had also moved to an address in Salisbury Road, Great Yarmouth, without informing authorities of his new address.

She said Weekley engaged in sexual conversations with Becca and also sent her explicit live webcam images of himself and asked if he could visit her.

Ms Matthews said when arrested in March, Weekley was found to have downloaded nine indecent images of children.

Weekley admitted attempting to engage in sexual communication with a 12-year-old, attempting to engage in sexual activity in front of a child and attempting to incite a child to engage in sexual activity.

He also admitted possession of indecent images and breaching his sexual harm prevention order.

Jailing him for three years and four months, Judge Andrew Shaw said Weekley was a “troubling individual” as he had been given a range of orders in the past to help him, but nothing had worked.

“It is only a matter of time before you seek out a child in person and cause substantial harm to that child by committing a serious sexual offence.”

He said Weekley had ignored his court order, and had used social media to make contact with someone he thought was 12, but in fact was an undercover police officer.

He warned Weekley that his sentences were only going to get longer unless he stopped offending, adding: “You are a very high risk individual.”

He also placed Weekley on the sex offenders register for life.

Convicted sex offender found with indecent images jailed

A convicted sex offender was found to have indecent images of children on his computer and had been posing as a 12 year-old on chatroom sites, a court heard.

Paul Weekley, 54, who had a previous conviction for possessing indecent images of children, was “nervous” when officers arrived at his address to make a check on him and although he at first denied having access to the internet, they found he did have a computer which contained two indecent images of children, Norwich Crown Court was told.

Ben Brighouse, prosecuting, said Weekley also admitted to officers that he visited chatrooms posing as a 12-year-old to engage other children in conversation.

“He explained he would try to chat with them to push the boundaries. He would try to obtain images from them .”

Mr Brighouse said that Weekley also admitted swapping and distributing images with others.

The court heard that Weekley had been convicted in 2011 of possessing indecent images of children and had attended an internet sex offenders treatment programme, although he had not completed the course when he committed the further offences.

Weekley of Middlegate, Great Yarmouth, admitted possessing and making indecent images and also breaching his sexual offences prevention order.

Jailing him for 16 months and making him subject to the sexual offences prevention order for life, Judge Nicholas Coleman said although he had attended a course to help him stop re-offending, he had gone on to commit further offences.

He said: “What you did was in flagrant breach of the assistance that was being offered to you.”

Judge Coleman said although Weekley had not met up with any children in person he had been distributing images to others.

“You were also involved in a deceit pretending to be a 12 year-old.”

He said as Weekley was acting in such a devious way he regarded him as “rather dangerous.”

Paedophile who targeted Lincolnshire children pulled knife on police

A paedophile who turned up at a railway station expecting to meet a woman for sex arrived to find police waiting for him, Lincoln Crown Court was told today (Friday, June 25).

James Rippington pulled out a knife when officers approached him at Grimsby Railway Station and then after he was detained he was again aggressive.

Ian Way, prosecuting, said Rippington had been tracked by two different groups of paedophile hunters as a result of his activities online.

A member of one of the groups called ‘Catching online Predators (COP) posed as a 20 year old woman and successfully managed to obtain Rippington’s true identity.

She set up a meeting with Rippington and arranged for police to be there.

Mr Way said: “She alerted the police to be at the scene to effect his arrest.

“The arrangement was made to meet at Grimsby Railway Station on 27 January 2019. The defendant was led to believe this would be a liaison where they would have sex.

“At 20 to six a number of police officers attended Grimsby Railway Station and saw the defendant standing near to a pub. He was followed and approached and produced a knife.

“He was told to let the knife go. He did and was detained. He was not compliant, shouting at officers saying they had ruined his life. He said he wished he had stabbed them when he had the chance. He was arrested and was spitting at officers as he was taken to the van.”

Mr Way said that earlier in the month Rippington had contacted a nine year old girl from Louth over Instagram claiming he was a 12 year old called Tom who lived in Lincoln.

He asked her to send him indecent photos of herself but she showed his messages to her mother and police were contacted.

As police were investigating, Rippington also attracted the attention of a group of paedophile hunters.

One of the group set up a decoy account claiming to be a 14 year old girl and was contacted by Rippington. This time he claimed to be 13. He again asked for her to send indecent photos.

As a result a different group of paedophile hunters were involved with one of their members posing as a 20 year old woman from Scunthorpe in an effort to identify Rippington.

Mr Way said that following his arrest Rippington’s mobile phone was checked and police found 94 indecent images of children on it.

When Rippington was interviewed he denied he had any sexual interest in children.

Rippington, 28, formerly of Grimsby but now of George Street, Mansfield, admitted offences of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, attempting to incite a child to engage in sexual activity and two charges of possession of indecent images of a child.

The offences all occurred in January 2019. He was jailed for 43 months. He was placed on the sex offenders register for life and given an indefinite sexual harm prevention order.

He was dealt with at an earlier hearing by Humber Magistrates for possession of a bladed article and two charges of assaulting an emergency worker as a result of the incident surrounding his arrest. He received a suspended jail sentence on January 29, 2019 for those matters.

Judge Catarina Sjolin Knight told him: “You denied any sexual motivation or any sexual interest in children. That is fighting reality.”

June 2021

Paedophile jailed after sex chats with undercover cops

A pervert who engaged in sexual conversations with undercover police officers believing them to be young girls has been jailed for 28 months.

Mohamed Adia, who lived at home with his elderly mother after his father was murdered in 2002, turned to chat rooms where he befriended 13-year-old Lucy and 12-year-old Ria.

But Bolton Crown Court heard that the schoolgirls were fictional characters created by police in chat rooms.

Over a two-month period from September 2019 51-year-old Adia asked the “girls” for photographs in their school uniforms and requested one take pictures at her school.

On other occasions he described in detail how Ria could perform a sex act upon herself and demanded, the next day, that she tell him about it.

Adia, of Quebec Street, Bolton, also wanted to know about their underwear and discussed arranging a meeting to have sex.

Julian Goode, prosecuting, told how police first encountered Adia, who was using the name Salim, when they created a profile for Lucy on Kik messenger and he added her to Skype.

He was made aware of Lucy’s age chat became increasingly sexualised and, at one stage told her, “I’m always horny”.

The court heard that Adia regularly told the girls to delete their conversations and not tell anyone about them.

In November 2019 he stopped sending messages and on January he was arrested and eventually pleaded guilty to three counts of attempting to incite a child to engage in sexual activity and two of of attempting to have a sexual conversation with a child.

Judge Smith sentenced Adia to a 28 months in prison. He will be placed on the sex offenders’ register and be subject to a sexual harm prevention order for 10 years.

Keiran Alderton – Anfield

June 2021

Paedophile bought Kinder Eggs to meet girl at McDonald’s

A paedophile bought Kinder Eggs to give to a “girl” he was planning to meet at McDonald’s.

Keiran Alderton was arrested outside B&M in Hunts Cross after talking online to what he thought was a 13-year-old girl, but she was actually an undercover police officer.

The 31-year-old, under the username ‘HornyScouser78’, told the girl he was “going to kiss the face off her” and “kissing might lead to more”.

After he was arrested police discovered sickening child sex abuse images of children on his iPhone, including pictures of children being raped.

Cheryl Mottram, prosecuting today at Liverpool Crown Court, said the decoy profile of a 13-year-old girl, was set up by police on Kik Messenger.

Ms Mottram said: “On June 5 on that application she was contacted by ‘HornyScouser78′”.

After being told the ‘girl’ was 13-years of age Alderton “asked for details about her” and “asked if she ‘liked older blokes'”

Ms Mottram said Alderton then “sent an image of himself in a red Liverpool t-shirt”.

She said he informed the “girl” he was 30 years of age and said it was a ‘shame’ she wasn’t older”.

Alderton asked for a photo and was sent a picture of a girl, to which he replied she was “well fit with nice lips and eyes”.

Ms Mottram said: “He suggested meeting up and asked what they would do when they met up and said ‘maybe a little kiss’.”

She said they then arranged to meet at McDonald’s on June 10, 2020, at 11am.

The undercover police officer asked Alderton to bring Kinder Eggs and Alderton said he was “going to kiss the face off her” and “kissing might lead to more”.

Alderton was arrested “at the retail park outside a B&M store where he had been to buy her Kinder Eggs”.

After his arrest officers found 347 indecent pictures of children on his iPhone, including 35 of the most serious category, which involved images of children being raped.

Ms Mottram said the youngest child in the images was five-years-old.

Alderton, of Feltwell Road, Anfield, admitted attempting sexual communication with a child, attempting to meet a child after sexual grooming, three counts of making an indecent photograph of a child and possession of indecent images of children.

Judge Anil Murray, sentencing, said: “You travelled in an effort to meet what you thought was a child, that went beyond looking at images.”

Determining whether the prison sentence could be suspended Judge Murray explained a pre sentence report deemed him a “high risk of serious harm to children should you reoffend”.

The judge said: “I ask whether you present a risk to the public, the answer is yes.”

Judge Murray added: “There are significant concerns about your sexual preoccupation and level of denial.”

The judge jailed Alderton for two years and two months.

He was also ordered to sign the Sex Offenders Register for 10 years and told to adhere to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for the same period.
