A depraved paedophile has been sentenced after filming himself sexually abusing a toddler

Andrew McAdam, 36, of Mayfield, Edinburgh, sexually abused a toddler over five months, recording the abuse and sharing the footage with another offender.

The victim was between 12 and 18 months old when the abuse took place. He was still only three years old at the time of sentencing.

McAdam also incited and encouraged the rape of a separate young boy by fellow offender Connor Cashmore in England.

The High Court in Glasgow heard that McAdam encouraged Cashmore remotely while the abuse was happening. Cashmore was separately sentenced to 20 years in prison for offences including child rape and sexual assault.

McAdam admitted nine charges covering March 2023 to September 2024. Police Scotland said the offences against the baby took place in Edinburgh and the Trossachs.

McAdam was identified through a Greater Manchester Police investigation after he was linked to indecent images found on another offender’s phone.

Police Scotland examined his devices and uncovered prolonged communications with several offenders, including encouragement to sexually abuse children and the sharing of child sexual abuse material.

His other offending included sexual communications, sexual exposure and public indecency. He also filmed himself exposing himself on the upper deck of a bus in Edinburgh city centre.

The baby’s parents described the devastating consequences for their family, including the fear of eventually having to explain to their son what happened to him.

Lord Scott said McAdam had shown no convincing or meaningful remorse and had minimised his responsibility. The judge described the harm caused and McAdam’s culpability as extremely high.

Andrew McAdam pleaded guilty to nine charges. The published police and sentencing reports describe offences involving:

  • – Conspiracy to sexually exploit and abuse two young children.

  • – Direct sexual abuse of an infant, committed over five months.

  • – Inciting and encouraging another man to rape a young child.

  • – Recording and sharing child sexual abuse images and videos.

  • – Sexual exposure.

  • – Public indecency.

  • – Sexual communications

The individual prison terms would have totalled 37 years and 11 months, but the judge said several charges overlapped and would run together, bringing that total to 15 years and 11 months.

Treating the offences as a single course of conduct, he set a 14-year prison starting point, then reduced it by approximately 25% for the guilty pleas, reflecting the court time saved.

The final sentence was ten-and-a-half years in custody plus a three-and-a-half-year extension on licence—a 14-year extended sentence.

He was placed on the sex offenders’ register indefinitely and banned indefinitely from approaching or contacting his direct victim, either directly or indirectly.
