Midlothian pervert Scout leader jailed for dressing boys up as Native Americans and painting their genitals
A pensioner who sexually assaulted young boys when he was their Scout troop leader has been jailed for three years.
Bruce Love used his hands to cover the youngsters in the body paint when the children were part of a Scout ‘Red Indian’ dance troop.
Love, 82, smeared the red dye over the boys genitals while they stood naked in his bath at his former home in Bonnyrigg, Midlothian, in the 1960s and 70s.
He was in charge of a troop for around a decade and activities included youngsters dancing out Native American storylines while he banged a drum at events in Fife and Midlothian.
Love had denied any wrongdoing and stood trial on indictment at Edinburgh Sheriff Court earlier this year where he was eventually found guilty of six charges of using lewd and libidinous practices towards boys under his care.
Six male victims, now all in their 50s, gave evidence to the court stating they had been abused by Love when they were aged 11 and 12 years old.
One man said Love lured him to his former cottage in Bonnyrigg and “checked to see if I was ticklish” before stripping him naked and putting him over his knee.
A second victim told the jury Love had exposed himself and committed an indecent act in front of the lad during a Scout camp near Moffat.
While a third man, who is related to Love, said the shamed Scout master “cupped my genitals” while he smeared the paint over the his naked body.
Love returned to the dock for sentencing and Sheriff Robert Fife told him he had carried out “a grave breach of trust” while he had been in charge of the boys.
Sheriff Fife added: “The evidence heard in court was that you were an authoritarian and you were strict and the boys did what they were told.
“You used that authority to isolate these boys and these boys were violated by you. My impression is that the six boys were chosen by you and abused by you.
“The law has eventually caught up with you. Your disgrace is complete. You continue to deny the charges and there is no remorse.
“Because of the gravity of the offences there is no alternative to a custodial sentence.”
Love, now of Eastleigh, Southampton, was jailed for three years and placed on the sex offenders register indefinitely.
Previously the court heard that Love set up the ‘Red Indian’ dance events and would invite the youngster’s to his home where he would get them to stand naked in the bath one at a time.
He would then daub the boys’ bodies in the red paint including smearing the liquid between their buttocks and over their genitals.
One victim, now 55, told the jury Love abused him following a dance rehearsal at the Scout Hall in Bonnyrigg in the 1970s.
The man, who was aged between 11 and 13 at the time, said: “Mr Love took me back to his own place to put body paint on me after the rehearsal. I remember being asked to go back.
“We went into the front room and Mr Love shut the curtains and said he wanted to see if I was ticklish.
“He asked me to undress and when I had nothing on Mr Love started painting my genitals.”
The man added he felt “uncomfortable with it” and after leaving the cottage he “remembered running home as I was frightened”.
All the victims told the court they did not tell anyone about Love’s conduct at the time of the offending due to their age.
But two years ago one victim made a complaint to the police after he divulged what had happened to him to his wife.
Police then contacted more men who had been in the scout group at the time and a further five confessed they had been subjected to the historical sex abuse.
Love admitted to the jury he would paint the boys’ bodies before the dance performances but denied he had touched any of them sexually or inappropriately.
Love denied any of the boys attended at his home alone and said all the sexual abuse described the victims “didn’t happen”.
But the jury decided the OAP was lying and returned unanimous guilty verdicts to six charges of using lewd and libidinous practices towards children at the Scout Hall in Bonnyrigg and at other locations between December 21, 1969 and January 18, 1978.
Love was found guilty of inducing the boys to remove their clothing, handling their genitals and applying paint to their penis, testicles and buttocks during several incidents in Bonnyrigg, Moffat, Seil Island and the Orkneys.

Midlothian pervert Scout master guilty of sexual offences
A pervert Scout Master sexually abused young boys by daubing their genitals in red paint – while the boys were dressed up as Native Americans.
Bruce Love covered youngsters in his care in the body paint when they were part of a ‘Red Indian Dance’ troupe connected to his Scout group.
Love, 82, gathered the boys, aged between 10 and 14, at his home where he would lather their bodies in the red dye as they stood naked in a bath.
The Scout leader then played drums while the boys danced out Native American storylines at events in Midlothian, Fife and at Seil Island.
Love, a retired social worker, carried out the sick campaign of abuse between 1969 and 1978 when he was in charge of the Scouts group in Bonnyrigg.
Six men, all now in their 50s, gave evidence to a jury at Edinburgh Sheriff Court last week where they detailed how Love targeted them when they were around 11 or 12 years old.

The former Scout Master, who now lives in Eastleigh, Southampton, denied the allegations but was found guilty of six charges of lewd and libidinous practices towards the men when they were children following a four-day trial at the Capital court.
Sheriff Robert Fife said: “Bail will be continued but I should record that this has been a grave breach of trust involving six boys. These are grave offences before this court.”
Following Friday’s verdict Sheriff Fife deferred sentence to next month for the preparation of reports.
The jury heard Love invited the group of young dancers to his former home in Bonnyrigg where he would apply the paint while the boys stood naked in his bath.
Several witnesses, who cannot be identified due to legal reasons, told the court how Love would touch their genitals and rub the paint between their buttocks as part of dressing up in the Red Indian costume.
One victim, now 55, said Love organised the Indian dance routine as a Scout event and regularly took boys back to his home.
The man, who was aged between 11 and 13 at the time, said: “Mr Love took me back to his own place to put body paint on me after the rehearsal. I remember being asked to go back.

A complaint by one of the men was made to the police about the historical abuse two years ago and after being contacted by officers a further five men gave statements stating Love had abused them.

He said he could not remember two of the boys from his time with the Scout group and claimed their lies had “spoiled” his memories of that time.

Paedophile scout master blows kisses to relatives as he’s jailed for second time
A former Scout leader – jailed more than 20 years ago for sexually abusing boys – was locked up again for molesting another child.
Allan Pollitt, 65, was barely out of his teens when, in the early 1970s, he targeted a teenaged boy at a care home in Aigburth and carried out a terrifying sex attack on him in his dormitory at night.
Pollitt crept into the boy’s bedroom at the Parkfield Children’s Home and climbed into bed alongside the frightened child before abusing him.
Months later, he was at it again, carrying out a violent sex attack on the same boy.
His victim, who was callously told by Pollitt to “clean himself up” after the nightmare incident, kept his awful secret for more than 40 years because he was embarrassed and feared not being believed.
He eventually divulged the abuse when speaking to a psychiatrist in 2016. Today, Pollitt, of Wellington Terrace, Birkenhead, was jailed for 10 years after being convicted of indecent assault following a trial.
The victim, now 60, said said he has had difficulty forming relationships and experiences intimacy issues.
He said he regrets not speaking up sooner and added: “The rest of my family turned out well.”
In 1997, Pollitt, was jailed for 15 years, later reduced to 12 on appeal, for sexually abusing six young boys.
Two of his victims were Cubs and two were residents at a Liverpool children’s home.
The former director of the Birkenhead Scout Gang Show also admitted indecently assaulting two Scouts.
Those boys he had abused boys were aged between nine and 17.
Today Judge Gary Woodhall told Pollitt, who blew kisses two family members sitting in the public gallery, that back in 1997 he’d had an opportunity to “come clean” but had failed to do so.
Pollitt, who was jailed for ten years, will now have to inform police of his whereabouts for the rest of his life. He is banned from working with children.

Ex-Gang Show boss is jailed for assaults on Scouts
A BI-SEXUAL former assistant Scout leader Allan Pollitt sexually abused six young boys and has now been jailed for 15 years.
A jury convicted the 43-year-old from Wellington Terrace, Birkenhead, of one charge of buggery and nine charges of indecent assault involving four boys.
Liverpool Crown Court heard that two of his victims were Cubs and two were youngsters from a Liverpool children’s home.
The former director of the Birkenhead Scout Gang Show also pleaded guilty to indecently assaulting two other Scouts.
Judge William Wickham, the Recorder of Liverpool, told Pollitt that he had been convicted on overwhelming evidence of abusing the boys, who were aged between nine and 17.
He told him he had abused two positions of trust and committed the offences “to gratify your perversion.”
He added: “You were on the staff of a children’s home; young, disadvantaged children were in your care.
You owed them a particular obligation of trust. What chance is there for such children?
They deserved care and loving kindness. Instead of that you abused them.”
Judge Wickham said: “You joined the Scouts, no doubt just as you went to that children’s home, in order to find opportunities to abuse children.
“Two families trusted you and continued to trust you with their children, not knowing what you were up to. That was another grave breach of trust to abuse Scouts in your care.”
The court had listened with mounting astonishment to the way Pollitt had described abusing one 15-year-old Scout on the beach of a Scottish island, said the judge.
“I don’t think anyone will forget that. It consisted of an almost unbelievable degree of depravity,” he told Pollitt, a self confessed bi-sexual, of Birkenhead.
Prosecuting counsel Mr Mark Brown told how one victim from Parkfield Children’s Home in Liverpool told a care boss that Pollitt had abused him, but nothing was done about it.
And two weeks later, when he assaulted the boy again, Pollitt answered the boy’s threats to report him by saying: ‘You’ve already tried that and look what happened.’
The court heard how Pollitt had also helped with the 26th Birkenhead Scout troup at Claughton.
Mr Brown said that in 1973 Pollitt indecently assaulted a 10-year-old Cub Scout while they were on a camping trip at Waverton, Cheshire.
He was sleeping on the stage and during the night he called the boy to the stage and got him into his sleeping bag to be his ‘hotwater bottle’.
Pollitt cuddled the boy, who fell asleep but woke to find Pollitt indecently assaulting him. This happened three times during the week-long trip.
He molested the boy again when he was about 12, after having befriended the boy’s parents and stayed overnight with the family.
Mr Brown said that the fourth victim was also a Scout, whose parents Pollitt also became friendly with.
He sexually molested him on a camping trip at Waverton when he was 13 years old and later at Pollitt’s home.
Pollitt alleged that the claims were untrue and suggested that the boys at the home had made them up in order to claim compensation.
He further claimed that the Scouts had made false allegations against him to topple him from his position as director of the Gang Show.

Scout leader jailed for abusing boys
Detectives believe a scout master who filmed himself sexually abusing three boys may have committed more crimes against vulnerable young children.
Graham Marriott, 39, of Sandpiper Lane, Wellingborough, was jailed for six years at Northampton Crown Court
Police raided his home in August last year after officers in London investigating a suspected paedophile ring discovered a dozen images Marriott had created and distributed.
They found more than 1,436 child porn images as well as a three-hour video which showed Marriott abusing several boys. Two of the victims were traced by police but they were unable to identify the others.
Judge Thomas Corrie told Marriott: “What you did was for your own perverted purposes over quite a long period when you groomed and sexually abused these boys.
“Not content with doing these terrible things, you recorded them and with some of these images, you sent them on to a fellow pervert.
“It is perfectly clear you are sexually obsessed with young boys and downloaded images from the internet to fuel your fantasies and act them out.”
Simon Carr, prosecuting, said Marriott preyed on boys within the scout movement, befriending them and then sexually abusing them.
The court heard he would tie up and blindfold his victims before filming them being molested.
Matthew Lowe, for Marriott, said: “It goes without saying that Marriott has pleaded guilty to the most appalling crimes which he recognises come with a custodial sentence of some length.”
Marriott was put on the Sex Offenders Register for life and banned from working with children again.
He admitted one charge of gross indecency, five of indecent assault, and 16 charges relating to child sexual abuse images
A video found at Marriott’s home led police to discover the extent of his crimes against young boys.
It soon became clear how he had used his position as a scout master to target, groom and abuse boys in his care as well as create child sexual abuse images to send to other paedophiles.
Head of Northamptonshire Police child protection unit Det Insp Chris Few said: “We are satisfied with the sentence which reflects the extreme seriousness of these offences.
“They came to light after the Metropolitan Police raided a man’s home in London last year and found evidence of him trading indecent images of young boys over the internet to a paedophile ring which included Marriott.
“It later transpired that Marriott was making the indecent images of a boy he was abusing.
