Dog survived on toilet water and toothpaste after being kept locked in

A woman has been banned from keeping all types of animals after her dog was severely malnourished and turned into a “walking skeleton”

Yogi, a husky-type cross, was so emaciated that the RSPCA inspector who rescued her said she was the thinnest dog she had seen alive.

Ayla Gilchrist 23, of Egreaves Avenue, Heanor kept Yogi locked in a rubbish-strewn house. Dirty nappies, litter and dog faeces covered the floor.

Yogi was kept in this condition for three months and lost two-thirds of her natural body weight.

Southern Derbyshire Magistrates’ Court heard RSPCA inspector Rachel Leafe attended the property on January 6, last year.

In a statement, she said: “She was walking, but looked very weak and unsteady on her legs.

“I could visibly see, despite the thick fur, that the dog was grossly underweight. The outline of every rib could be seen through the fur, as could the spine and hip bones. The dog’s face was sunken in.

“Her stomach was so sucked in that it looked like somebody could easily wrap their hands around her waist. I could not see any food or water. I was very concerned that if the dog was to be left any longer she may not survive.”

Rachel called Derbyshire police and with their assistance gained access to the property and carried Yogi to safety. The dog was too weak to jump onto the windowsill to escape.

Rachel said: “I was so shocked at how light the dog was to pick up. It just felt like picking up an empty rucksack. I could feel her breast bone which was very sharp and prominent and there was no fat or muscle surrounding her body at all.

“She looked like a walking skeleton and I had never felt a dog this thin that was still alive in all my life and career as an RSPCA Inspector.”

Yogi was then rushed to a vets, where they discovered she was micro-chipped and found that she was registered to Ayla Gilchrist.

Further investigation of the property found that there was no food or water for the pet. All they found were empty dog food tins and a tube of toothpaste, which had been ripped apart and chewed.

A vet who examined Yogi said: “The only reason she perhaps stayed alive as long as she did was because she was able to access the water in a downstairs toilet. The dog was caused an unimaginable degree of suffering for a period of at least two months.”

Yogi was taken to the RSPCA Chesterfield and North Derbyshire branch where she was rehabilitated and has been transformed into a healthy and loving dog. Rachel began calling her Honey, due to her sweet nature and fur colour.

Gilchrist pleaded guilty to three animal welfare offences after she admitted leaving Yogi alone in a house in Egreaves Avenue, Loscoe, Heanor, with no food.

As well as a ban on keeping animals, Gilchrist was given an 8 week sentence, suspended for 12 months for each of her offences.

She was also ordered to pay £200 costs and a victim surcharge of £128.

Her new owners, Linda and John re-homed her in Staveley.

Linda said she now enjoys getting plenty of love and attention who adores people – especially their grandchild Amelia.

The 57-year-old said: ” We have always had rescue dogs and I was on the look-out for one as we had lost our previous dog a year before. I saw her on the RSPCA branch website and fell for her then.

“She loves plenty of fuss and attention and she is so spoiled. She even has her own settee where she looks out of the window and likes to watch the neighbours and they also like to see her.

“I am so glad the RSPCA were able to rescue and rehabilitate her and she is such a lovely girl – they did a great job.”

Sick Leeds abuser banned from keeping animals

A 40-year-old man from Leeds has been banned from keeping animals after he violently abused his Labrador puppy causing 30 rib fractures.

Lee James Bradley inflicted cruel and violent attacks on helpless Labrador puppy Theo and didn’t seek help for a vet for two days despite the young pup struggling to breathe, suffering from a raised temperature, and being hunched up when walking.

X-rays then revealed Theo had trauma to the chest area along with the six recent rib fractures causing him significant pain.

They also revealed Theo had sustained 24 fractured ribs on both sides of his chest on an earlier occasion and were at differing stages of healing.

The vet felt they were likely to have been caused by blunt force trauma and the RSPCA were asked to investigate.

When questioned by the vet Bradley claimed he was not aware of any circumstances that may have caused Theo to have sustained such severe injuries.

However, when later questioned by RSPCA Inspector Danielle Grimshaw he stated Theo may have become injured as a result of a bin liner full of books having fallen on him.

RSPCA Inspector Grimshaw, who led the investigation, arranged for police to seize Theo and she took him to a vet for a clinical examination. Vets concluded Theo had suffered as a consequence of physical abuse and the fractures he had suffered were consistent with non-accidental injuries.

Bradley, of Ascot Road, Kippax, appeared at Kirklees Magistrates’ Court on Monday to be sentenced after pleading guilty to two counts of causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal and a charge of failing to ensure the needs of an animal were met at an earlier hearing.

The abuse was said to have taken place over a 4-week period between 23 December 2019 and 21 January 2020.

In addition to an indefinite ban on keeping all animals, which he can not appeal for five years, Bradley was sentenced to a 12-month Community Order requiring 300 hours of unpaid work in the community.

He was also ordered to pay £300 costs and a victim surcharge of £90.

The court placed a deprivation order on Theo meaning the RSPCA can now find him a loving new home.

Theo remained in RSPCA care during the investigation and has since made a full recovery from his injuries.

December 2020

Man jailed for for inflicting blunt force trauma to dog and cat

A Somerset man who admitted animal cruelty towards a cat and dog has been jailed and barred from keeping animals for life.

Henry Smedley, 26, of Peasedown St John, Bath was sentenced to 23 weeks immediate in prison following separate incidents in which a cat died and a dog was badly injured.

RSPCA Inspector Miranda Albinson began investigations after the charity received a number of calls claiming animals were being abused at an address where Smedley was staying.

Alongside reports from eyewitnesses, who spoke of their concerns at seeing Smedley mistreating animals, veterinary reports proved a cat, Maisie, and a dog, Lola, had suffered blunt force traumas, leaving them with injuries which had not been treated.

Maisie, a 10-month-old tortoiseshell cat, was taken to a vet by Smedley, who claimed that he was concerned she was dying after he found her drowning in a bath full of water he had left unattended.

Upon examination, vets found that she was already dead and had been for several hours, and that the account told by Smedley did not seem fitting to the clinical picture of Maisy.

She was in an emaciated condition, as though she had been neglected for some time, and the marks seen on her body did not fit with drowning and were more consistent with trauma.

Further examinations found she also had 31 rib fractures, three spinal fractures, and a dislocation of the sternum.

A three-year-old Jack Russell terrier named Lola, who was kept in a small cage by Smedley, was also found to be underweight with her ribs, spine and pelvic bones visible.

Radiographs taken of Lola revealed she too had seven rib fractures with at least two stages of healing which had not been treated by a vet.

Smedley admitted to the charges relating to Lola and Maisie when he appeared before Bristol Magistrates Court on December 7.

Alongside the immediate custodial sentence, Smedley was banned from owning or keeping animals for life.

Lola has since been rehomed by the RSPCA and is now living happily with her new owners.

Man, 57, avoids jail after punching ‘yelping’ French bulldog three times in the head before trying to drown it in hot tub

A remorseless bully who punched a French bulldog in the face three times before attempting to drown the dog in a hot tub has been spared jail.

Willesden Magistrates’ Court heard how Glenn Calderwood, 57, punched three-legged Toffee the dog with full force before forcing and trying to drown the defenceless dog in the hot tub in the garden he shares with the dog’s owner

During the attack on January 20, 2020, Calderwood, from Brent, left the French bulldog ‘yelping and crying’.

Calderwood was handed a 20-week prison sentence, suspended for 18 months, and also ordered to pay both costs and damages to Ms Riddex.

Stuart Bell, prosecuting, described how neighbours had heard Toffee yelling in pain and looked out of their window to see Calderwood holding the dog ‘by the scruff of the neck five foot above the ground’.

Bell continued: ‘He is then seen to have punched the dog three times to the head with a clenched fist.

‘The dog was continuously yelping and crying.

‘He then went over to a hot tub in the garden, which had a cover on it but one foot of rain water had gathered on top of it.

‘The defendant used both hands to push the dog under the water.

‘The dog had been yelling and then the neighbour could not hear the dog any longer.’

Bell said that Calderwood let the dog, who was left with redness in the eye, go after his neighbour shouted out at him.

‘Forcing the dog underwater was a deliberate and gratuitous attempt to cause suffering,’ Bell said. ‘The dog was in great pain and subjected to being under the water for many seconds.’

Calderwood, who wore a grey suit and ponytail, said his ‘behaviour was somewhat erratic’.

The court heard Calderwod has previous convictions for causing a disturbance on NHS premises, common assault, assaulting a police constable, and stealing from his place of work.

He denied the charges but was found guilty after a trial for causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal.

While magistrates deliberated on the case, Calderwood shouted from the docks: ‘I’ve have been anxious about this for over a year. Do I have to suffer any longer?’

Magistrate Michael Herlihy told Calderwood that his actions had been ‘deliberate’ and would have caused ‘significant distress’ to the dog and it owner and that his medical condition, which was not specified, led to his sentence being suspended.

He was handed a 20-week prison sentence, suspended for 18 months, and was also ordered to pay £150 in costs and £150 compensation to Ms Riddex.

After receiving his punishment, Calderwood complained about the compensation he had to pay to Toffee’s owner. He said: ‘The animal should have been taken to a vet.’

Somerset man jailed after terrier discovered ‘close to death’ due to severe neglect

A cruel and remorseless coward has been jailed for 12 weeks after a terrier was discovered ‘close to death’ due to severe neglect.

RSPCA inspector Marie Griffith found the dog -called Barney – under half its recommended body weight, with his ribs, spine and pelvic bones visible.

He was also suffering from hypothermia, depression and dehydration.

Ashley Woodruff, 28, of St Johns Road, Yeovil has also been banned from keeping animals for life after he appeared before Yeovil Magistrates’ Court on Thursday (11 March), where he admitted causing unnecessary suffering to his dog.

Mrs Griffith attended his address after a tip-off from a member of the public.

She said: “Woodruff was holding a small brown terrier type dog tightly. Even though a lot of the dog’s body was covered by Woodruff’s arms I could see the dog was in an extremely poor condition

“Barney was totally emaciated with no body fat present at all. His ribs, spine and pelvic bones were very visible, and the sockets behind his eyes were sunken. His coat was dull and he appeared lethargic and depressed.”

Barney was rushed to the vets for urgent treatment and checks. Upon examination, vets discovered he weighed just 4.8kg, less than half the weight of a dog of his age, sex and type should weigh.

Medics also discovered that Barney was hypothermic, and concluded that his lack of body fat had left him unable to stay warm while living outdoors.

He was hospitalised and given intravenous fluids and treated with warming equipment to rehydrate and bring up his body temperature.

Barney also had several rotten teeth, including some that were showing signs of infection.

Barney has since recovered and is enjoying life in his new home.
