Pensioner ordered to sign sex offenders register after admitting indecently assaulting two males 40 years ago

A pensioner was ordered to sign the sex offenders register yesterday after he admitted indecently assaulting two males 40 years ago.

Appearing at Antrim Crown Court by video-link from his solicitors office, Ian James Alexander McDonald entered guilty pleas to two charges against him.

McDonald (69), from the Clonetrace Road in Broughshane, admitted two counts of indecent assault – one against each male victim, on dates between February 28, 1980 and April 6, 1982.

While the facts of the case were not opened yesterday, prosecuting counsel Michael Chambers said it was a “straightforward case” but warned Judge Patricia Smyth there “may be an issue with dangerousness”.

Defence QC Neil Connor asked the judge to adjourn passing sentence to allow probation to complete a pre-sentence report.

Freeing McDonald on bail in the meantime, Judge Smyth listed the sentencing hearing for March 30. She told McDonald however that given his confessions, he is “now required to sign the sex offenders register.”
