Paedophile jailed for arranging to meet ‘child’

A paedophile has been jailed for arranging to meet a child intending to commit sexual offences

Jessica Ann Smith, 41, communicated with what she thought was a 14-year-old girl online but who turned out to be a decoy from paedo hunting team ‘Justice for the Tears’ who passed the chat-log onto UK database

When local paedophile hunting group UK database arrived in place of the ‘child’ they found Smith hiding in the bushes.

Smith was jailed for two years and 10 months when she appeared at Exeter Crown Court.

The defendant pleaded guilty to four offences relating to communicating with children online.

Prosecutor Ms Mary McCarthy said the first offence happened when Smith set up a profile on a site called Skout pretending to be a 20-year-old woman called Jasmine from Exmouth.

She started chatting to what she thought was a 14-year-old but was a decoy account.

The tone of the conversation quickly turned sexual, said the prosecutor, and Smith shared sexual photos and encouraged sexual behaviour.

In July 2018 Smith set up another profile , this time of a 21-year-old woman, on a different site.

Once more she thought she was communicating with a 14-year-old girl when in fact it was the same group of paedophile hunters.

Smith sent sexual pictures of women and arranged to meet in person. When told a 12-year-old might also come along Smith encouraged it and indicated she should also be part of the sexual activity.

“When people behind the profile arrived they saw a person dressed as a male peering through a hedge,” said Ms McCarthy.

They told Smith they were looking for a female paedophile. Smith tried but failed to talk her way out of the situation and police were called.

Smith admitted sending the messages but said she did not intend to meet an underage girl or commit a sexual act with them.

She was currently going through the process of gender reassignment and was terrified of going to a male prison.

The defendant admitted one charge at Sidbury of communicating with a child and attempting to meet for a sexual offence and three offences of attempting to cause or incite a child to engage in sexual activity.

Paedophile handyman fled child abuse trial before being jailed

A former Torquay hotel handyman has been jailed for a series of sex offences against children dating back four decades.

Maurice Button, 69, disappeared half way through his trial at Exeter Crown Court for offences against two girls who were aged just eight and 12 at the time.

But the paedophile gave himself up over the weekend and was found guilty by a jury.

During his sentencing one of his victims fought back tears when describing the devastating effect his abuse had on her. She said after years of trying to lock away her experiences in the back of her mind she had found the courage to speak out.

She told Button: “I tried to forget over the years. I boxed you up and put you to the back of my head and threw away the key.” She added: “I will go today knowing I fought my demons and won with the support of family, friends and the police.”

Button was found guilty of seven offences and was jailed for 13 years by Judge David Evans. He must also serve a further year on extended licence.

The trial was told six of the offences were committed against the older of the two girls.

Button groomed the child over a two-week period, showering her with praise and telling her how special she was. He repeatedly indecently assaulted and had unlawful sexual intercourse with a child under 13.

The abuser gained his victims’ trust with his outgoing and ‘fun’ personality. In reality he was a predatory paedophile.

In her statement to the court the victim said: “Your type think you have done no wrong. You singled me out then you started to fulfil your sick desires, to sexually abuse me and rape me. You ruined my path of life.”

She said for many years she was still too traumatised to think about what had happened in her past.

She considered suicide as the final throw of the dice to rid herself of the memories. But since coming forward with the truth everyone in her family was proud of her for the courage she had displayed bringing Button to justice.

“You are the one who has brought shame and disgust,” she told him. “Your picture will be in the local paper showing the sick and perverted paedophile you are.”

Button’s other victim said she had also fought to suppress in her mind what had happened to her. Aged just eight, Button had committed an act of gross indecency.

The defendant has a number of previous convictions. In 1995 he was jailed for six months for indecently assaulting a child.

Ms Virginia Cornwall, defending, said since then Button had not offended and had been happily married for 20 years. She said he now suffered with diabetes and prison would be difficult.

Button, of Dandelion Close, Newton Abbot, told police the offences never happened.

On Wednesday of last week he was due to give evidence in his trial but instead left the court at lunchtime, changed his clothes and drove away. Police issued an appeal for the missing man saying he had last been seen getting off a bus in Sidmouth High Street at around 2.45pm.

Despite some delays the trial continued in his absence and he gave himself up over the weekend.

“Perhaps that was always due to happen given you had little to eat and nowhere to go,” said Judge Evans.

He added: “You were avoiding overwhelming evidence against you in this trial. It was a deliberate attempt to evade or delay justice.” He sentenced Button to six months for absconding. That sentence must be served before the 13 years can begin.

The judge said: “The truth was you are a paedophile and you had a sexual interest in young girls. You used your position as an adult with a reputation for being gregarious and friendly and fun as the means by which to trick the first victim when she was just eight years old.”

He said that offence happened when the defendant was 28. He then went on to commit the even more serious offences against the older child.

“You were doubtless reasonably confident that neither girl would feel able to raise the alarm given their ages.”

He said the consequences of Button’s offending had ‘cascaded down the years’ and left a deep trauma for the victims.

The court was told the sentences available to the court in 2021 would be more severe than they were under 1980 laws. Judge Evans said he had to take that into consideration when reaching the total sentence.

Button must serve at least half of his 13 years in prison. He will then be considered by the parole board for release. Once the 13-year term is complete he will be subject to a further year on licence.

Plymouth flasher drops his shorts in front of kids in a shop

A man dropped his shorts in front of children in a shop and then spat at a police officer, a court heard.

Trystan Preston, aged 46, shocked customers in a convenience store before attacking a constable and a sergeant trying to detain him, Plymouth magistrates were told.

Preston dropped his shorts to expose his genitals at Grenville Stores in Grenville Road, St Judes, last summer.

He pleaded guilty to outraging public decency by behaving in an indecent manner on August 30.

Preston, of Ford Park Road, Mutley, also admitted two counts of assaulting an emergency worker in the exercise of their functions that same day.

The pleas were entered the day after the offences but Preston was only sentenced last month.

Magistrates handed him an eight-week prison sentence suspended for six months. He was ordered to pay each officer £100 in compensation, as well as £85 prosecution costs and £128 victim surcharge.

The bench stated in their reasons for custody that the indecent exposure was in front of children.

Magistrates added that the assault on the constable in Grenville Road involved spitting.

Preston also assaulted the sergeant at Charles Cross police station after his arrest.

Man jailed after dismembering woman above Exeter kebab shop

A man has been jailed for life for murdering and dismembering a woman above a kebab shop.

Azam Mangori, 24, killed Lorraine Cox, 32, in his room above a fastfood takeaway in Exeter city centre in September last year

A pathologist was unable to determine a cause of Ms Cox’s death due to the length of time between her murder and remains being found. She could have been suffocated as the T-shirt she had been wearing was found in her mouth.

Mangori cut up her body over the course of a week and disposed of her clothing and possessions in bins and woodland.

Today (April 7), Mangori was sentenced to life in imprisonment with a minimum term of 20 years.

After murdering Ms Cox, Mangori used her SIM card in his mobile phone to pretend she was alive and well to family and friends. They reported her missing to the police.

Following a four-week trial at Exeter Crown Court, Mangori, of no fixed address, was convicted of murder by a jury after six hours of deliberations.

He had previously admitted a separate charge of preventing Ms Cox’s lawful burial.

Prosecutor Simon Laws QC told the court the defendant had a “morbid interest in amputation” and days before and after the murder had looked at images relating to the subject.

Mr Laws said: “Given the dates he viewed this material, you may think it is clear he was interested in the topic before he had any need for information.

“He did not have the dead body of Lorraine Cox in his room until a couple of days later. When he did, he performed a neat and professional amputation of her limbs.”

“You will no doubt want to consider whether it was this interest that may have motivated him to commit this murder,” he said.

Mangori purchased items to dispose of Miss Cox’s body over a number of days, including a trowel after viewing a website entitled: “How to dig a grave by hand.”

Knife wielding Vytautas Ausrota rugby tackled woman to ground and threatened to rape her

This man rugby tackled a woman to the ground and threatened her with a knife with the intent to sexually assault her.

A woman aged in her 50s from Surrey, was walking along the South West Coast path just outside Lyme Regis when she heard a man running toward her from behind at approximately 3pm on Saturday, August 29, 2020.

Bournemouth Crown Court heard how Vytautas Ausrota, aged 30 and of Plymouth, approached the victim and rugby tackled her to the ground and knelt on top of her. The victim saw he was holding an orange penknife with the blade out.

The defendant threatened to kill the woman, telling her ‘I will kill you’ and said he wanted sex.

Moments later, two members of the public approached and the victim asked them for help. They told Ausrota they would call the police if he did not get off her.

The defendant got up and left the scene. Police were contacted and a search of the area was launched.

After 8.08pm, he called Dorset Police and admitted that he had attacked a woman in Lyme Regis and officers were looking for him. He was arrested in Broad Street and arrested.

Ausrota pleaded guilty to threatening with an offensive weapon, committing an offence with the intent to commit a sexual offence and assault by beating.

Ausrota was sentenced to a total of three years and four months in prison and made the subject of a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for an indefinite period. Ausrota was also ordered to pay a £190 victim surcharge.
