A MAN has been jailed for five and a half years at Oxford Crown Court after admitting sexually assaulting an eight-year-old girl.
Paul Govier, 27, from Westfield, Harwell, admitted six counts of sexually assaulting the girl between January 1 and March 30, earlier this month.
Det Con Andy Ryan, from the Child Abuse Investigation Unit, said: “I would like to commend the victim and her family in this case, who have been very brave in ensuring Govier will pay for his despicable crimes against this young girl.”
Det Con Ryan said Judge Patrick Eccles said Govier had committed ‘horrible crimes’ on a little girl, while in a position of trust.
He added: “The child reported it to her family and reported it to us.
“I would say it’s had a massive effect on the family.
“Things have had to change as a result.
“He was sentenced to the maximum permissive level, minus the reduction for an early guilty plea.”
He urged people to come forward and report sexual abuse against children.
He said: “Complaints are dealt with sensitively by specially trained officers.
“I think people fear that there is this ‘old style’ of policing but people are believed.”
