Sex offender is detained

A CONVICTED sex offender has been detained in custody for 48 days by magistrates after failing to comply with the sex offenders’ register for the fourth time.

Troy Coaker, 19, who appeared before Bodmin court in custody on July 9, was ordered to register as a sex offender until 2012 after being convicted of a sexual assault on a young child under 16.

But, said prosecutor Anita Kennett, between June 30 and July 8, after his release from a Young Offenders’ Institution (YOI) for previous breaches, Coaker did not notify police within three days that he had gone to live at an address in Lanchard Place, Liskeard.

David Harvey, mitigating, said that Coaker had gone to the Liskeard area as he had family there. He was caught in a “vicious circle” because every time he was released from custody he had nowhere to go to. He simply wanted an address so that he could get on with his life.

The magistrates told Coaker that they were not ordering a pre-sentence report as the offence was “very serious” and custody was inevitable.

Coaker was told he would be returned to a YOI until July 28 to serve the unexpired part of his licence and would then serve a further 28 days for the offence.
