A depraved rapist who repeatedly abused a eight year old girl and raped a woman twice has been remanded in custody after a jury convicted him of seven charges.
Bryan Young, 24, of Hamilton, was warned to expect a substantial prison sentence following his trial at the High Court in Dundee.
His offending against the child began in 2018, when she was just eight. Young, then aged between 16 and 17, attempted to touch her intimately at an address in Newburgh, Fife.
The abuse continued in Bridge of Earn, Perthshire. Between 2020 and 2022, he repeatedly sexually assaulted the same child, including in a shed, and attempted to rape her.
Jurors also found him guilty of two charges of raping the girl during that period, and of causing her to participate in sexual activity on occasions between 2019 and 2022.
Young was separately convicted of raping a woman at an address in Methil in 2022. The court heard she initially consented to sex but then withdrew consent. A second rape occurred in the same circumstances at the address.
After the verdicts, the court learned Young already had a conviction for a sexual offence against a child.
Prosecutor Chris MacIntosh told the court that Young had been convicted of indecently communicating with a child at Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court in January 2024.
Judge Paul Brown described the latest offences as very serious, condemning the repeated rape and sexual assault of a vulnerable young child and the repeated rape of the woman.
He expressed particular concern about Young’s previous conviction and ordered a social work report addressing risk and supervision following custody.
The judge told Young he had a substantial custodial sentence in mind and no longer considered him eligible for bail. Defence counsel Iain Paterson KC made no application for his release.
Supporters wept as the jury’s non-unanimous guilty verdicts were announced. Some jurors were also seen wiping away tears.
Young showed no emotion as officers escorted him to the cells.
He was placed on the sex offenders register on an interim basis. Sentencing remains pending, with his return to the High Court in Dundee scheduled for the following month
