Former magistrate jailed for child sex abuse

A former magistrate has been jailed for 11 years after being convicted of sexually abusing a young girl.

For years William Robinson sat on the bench handing out justice as a JP, but now a jury at Canterbury Crown Court has ruled the 72-year-old retired railwayman was secretly a paedophile.

Robinson, of The Green, Chartham, had denied 10 sex offences and sat shaking his head as the verdicts were announced.

But Judge Rupert Lowe told him: “I see you shaking your head as you have done metaphorically from the moment you were first accused, but this has been a great tragedy for many people.

“Let me make it clear that there is absolutely no doubt that you committed these 10 offences of which you have been convicted. And you have made the plight of your victim worse by withholding the truth.”

Judge Lowe said that Robinson had served the community by sitting as a JP at magistrates’ courts in London and was briefly chairman of the bench.

The judge told him: “I accept everything that has been said about you being a hard-working railwayman and a Justice of the Peace.”

But secretly Robinson had targeted a vulnerable child and molested her, leaving his victim traumatised by the appalling abuse.

The judge said Robinson thought no one would believe his victim and that would secure her silence.

He added: “This was disgraceful offending. The longer you go on denying what you did the more you allow your victim to suffer.”

The jury found him guilty of eight charges of sexual assault going back a number of years and two other sex offences.

After being jailed for a total of 11 years, Robinson turned to friends sat in the public gallery and shrugged his shoulders before being led away.

Magistrate jailed for seven-and-a-half years for sexually assaulting an 11-year-old boy

A magistrate has been jailed for seven-and-a-half years for sexually assaulting an 11-year-old boy in a car park beneath the courthouse he sat in.

Rodney Fox, 49, used his special privileges to access Reading Magistrates’ Court’s underground car park in order to molest the child.

He was convicted in April of two counts of sexual abuse and making indecent images of teenage boys.

The offences took place between October 2013 and October 2014.

St Albans Crown Court heard earlier that Fox who was also a teaching assistant befriended the boy and would buy him lunch on Saturdays before driving him to the empty car park and abusing him.

The jury of four men and eight women at his trial heard that after eating, the 49-year-old would kiss the boy before, on one occasion, Fox pulled down the boy’s jogging bottoms and put the child’s penis in his mouth.

The magistrate, of Northumberland Avenue, Reading, was arrested in November 2015

A police officer said he had “no doubt” Fox would have continued to offend against other children.

The abuse was revealed when a teacher spotted the boy looking pale and pre-occupied and she asked him what was wrong. He said he wanted to write it down as “things had gone too far.”

The note said: “I have never talked to anyone about this because I was worried no-one would believe me. But it’s gone too far. Today when I was walking to school I saw a car and wanted to step out in front of the car because of this.

“When I was at school I had a male teacher called Rod Fox who helped me out with spelling and grammar and ran a computer club.

“He used to look at me in a sickening way. He would take me out to lunch and made friends with my mum.

“On my way back to the car he would get in my personal space and in the back of the car he would kiss me and wouldn’t let me go.

“I don’t want to write any more.”

He said he decided to tell someone a year after the last incident because he “didn’t want him to win.”

April 2017

Pervert GUILTY of abusing boy in Reading judge’s car park

A magistrate who used the privacy of a secluded judges’ car park to sexually abuse a boy was detained in a prison cell today after being convicted by a jury.

Teaching assistant Rodney Fox was a Justice of the Peace and had a special key fob which gave him the privilege to park in the exclusive car park at weekends.

He used the darkened car park to take a boy aged between 11 and 12 years to eat Macdonald’s or Kentucky Fried Chicken fast food after he had tutored him at a weekend computer club.

The jury of four men and eight women heard that after eating, the 49-year-old would kiss the boy before, on one occasion, Fox pulled down the boy’s jogging bottoms and put the child’s penis in his mouth.

The boy then stopped going to the club and a year after the abuse told a teacher about his ordeal as he had thought about walking out in front of a car to “stop the memories in my head.”

Judge Stephen Warner told Fox that he now faced “a substantial custodial sentence” after the jury convicted him of two counts of sexual abuse and of making of indecent images of teenage boys by majority verdicts. Fox had denied all charges against him.

Unshaven Fox, dressed casually in jeans and a tee-shirt, held his head in his hands and cried as the judge told the former IT worker and teaching assistant that he was to be denied his freedom until his sentencing on May 5.

Judge Warner said: “I am not prepared to grant bail. Mr Fox has been convicted of serious offences and a substantial custodial sentence is inevitable. I am remanding him in custody.

“I am asking for reports to be compiled to assess the dangerousness of Mr Fox to children.”

The jury was not allowed to hear evidence regarding another boy who told police he had been “pulled” into a room where Mr Fox had tried to show him photographs of penises under the pretence of personal hygiene after handing out a leaflet about puberty.

In addition Fox also turned up at another boy’s house where he helped construct some bedroom furniture and was left alone in a bedroom with the child. He removed his top to be bare-chested.

It is understood other children and their parents were interviewed by detectives in the child sex offence unit at Reading Police Station and were told that their sons had been groomed but that no criminal offence had been committed.

Samantha Cohen, prosecuting, told the court that Fox had ingratiated himself into the family of the boy and his mother “implicitly trusted Mr Fox” after he helped her son as a teaching assistant at a primary school in Reading, Berks.

She told the jury: “Over a number of years he ingratiated himself into the boy’s family and his mother allowed him to attend a computer club which the defendant ran on Saturday mornings at a local library.

“After that club, Mr Fox would take the boy, who over the period was aged 11 and 12 years, for lunch.

“Sometimes he would take him to the car park and sit in the back of his car where they would eat that lunch.

“The car was parked underneath Reading Magistrates’ Court. Mr Fox had access to it because he was a part-time magistrate at that court.

“In his car Mr Fox kissed the boy on he lips. On one occasion he took the boy’s penis our of his trousers and sucked it.

“The boy was disgusted and did not know what to do.”

The prosecuter added that there was an element of “hero worship” on behalf of the boy.

“He groomed the boy,” Ms Cohen said.

“When a boy gets to play computer games all morning and is bought a fast food lunch, it almost guarantees hero worship.”

When the boy revealed the abuse, social services and the police were contacted and police arrested Fox and searched his home on November 20, 2015.

The jury heard that Fox accepted in police interview that he gave lifts to the boy and would eat lunches in his car with him but denied any sexual contact. He added that he boy had kissed him and he had “blown a raspberry” on his tummy on one occasion and there had been also been some tickling.

A laptop computer found in a wardrobe in the bedroom at Fox’s home which he shared with his wife and two children in Caversham, Berks., was forensically examined by police who found two pornographic images of teenage boys. Fox refused to say who the computer belonged to.

The prosecuter added that from 2010, when Fox started working with children, he had received almost yearly training on safeguarding youngsters.

However, he had been given a verbal warning at a primary school for being left alone with a student as well as a number of verbal pieces of advice about the “blurring of professional boundaries” with some children.

Fox, now of Northumberland Avenue, Whitley, Reading, Berks, denied one count of sexual assault of a child under 13 years, one count of inviting sexually activity with a child under 13 years between 2013 and 2014 and making indecent images of children sometime before November 20, 2015.

Paedophile ex-teacher and magistrate spared jail

copeland

A pervert who worked as a teacher before becoming a school governor and a magistrate has been spared jail after vowing to beat his child sexual abuse images addiction.

Vincent Copeland, of Leigh Road, Leigh, appeared at Ipswich Crown Court today after admitting three counts of possessing indecent images of children at Ipswich Magistrates’ Court in June.

The charges related to category A, B and C images and movies that he sent to himself via two email accounts.

One of the depraved videos in the worst category A featured the rape of a ten-year-old boy.

The 61-year-old had what Judge David Goodin described as an “exemplary career” until his arrest in November for possession of the vile images.

The court heard how Copeland retired as deputy headteacher at Thorpe Bay School- now Futures College- in 2002 after spiralling into depression following the death of his long-term partner.

Maria Dineen, mitigating, said Copeland’s world “fell apart” and he became isolated and obsessed with the online world.

He developed an interest in viewing images of young children, but at the same time took up posts as a school governor at both St Thomas More High School in Westcliff and Our Lady of Lourdes Primary School in Leigh.

He also became a member of Southend Council’s children and lifelong learning scrutiny committee and a magistrate.

She said: “This is a man who may well have betrayed the faith that others had in him and he has betrayed the standards of public life.

“But at no stage did he ever use any role to commit any offence.”

Despite being found with the images, Copeland told police he had dumped at least seven computers in bins around Southend in the past.

After his arrest, police found a letter at his home which he intended to send to friends.

It said: “You know already, or will shortly find out, I’m in trouble for looking at illegal pornography online.

“I’m ashamed of this and will serve my punishment.

“I hope that you can forgive me.”

Copeland told police he had been downloading images of boys for “five or six years” and was interested in those aged 15 or over, although most of the images found involved 12-year-olds.

The court heard how Copeland has since taken part in courses run by paedophile treatment charity the Lucy Faithfull Foundation.

Judge Goodin said sentencing guidelines allowed him to jail Copeland for a short period of time but in light of his “public humiliation” and “genuine remorse” he decided on a non-custodial sentence.

He said: “There is absolutely no reason to suppose that you have ever presented a risk to any child in your long career in education, or indeed to any other child in terms of what they call contact offences.

“But you will be aware that there are child victims of this offending- the child victim in this case is a ten-year-old boy.

“Every time somebody downloads or clicks on such an image they foster a demand for the creation of more and the inevitable consequential harm and humiliation of a young child somewhere.

“Usually, nobody know who or where they are.”

However, Judge Goodin said Copeland could be rehabilitated and as a result a jail term was unnecessary.

He said: “I believe that you wanted to take the Lucy Faithfull course because you wish to put this terrible conduct behind you and tear yourself away from it.”

Copeland was handed a three-year community order and must take part in a 30 day internet sex offender rehabilitation programme.

He was also ordered to pay £425 costs and a £60 victim surcharge.

A five year sexual harm prevention was also made to limit his contact with children under 16 years of age.

Paedophile teacher offers to pay for course in bid to escape jail

A FORMER teacher, magistrate and school governor has offered to pay for a course to beat his child abuse images addiction in a bid to avoid jail.

Paedophile Vincent Copeland, of Leigh Road, Leigh, admitted three counts of possessing indecent images of children at Ipswich Magistrates’ Court in June and appeared at Ipswich Crown Court today to be sentenced.

However, Judge David Goodin unexpectedly adjourned the hearing and ordered a report from the probation service into whether the ten day course – run by the Lucy Faithfull Foundation in Epsom – would be a suitable punishment.

The court heard how the 60-year-old was caught sending three category A, two category B and two category C videos and movies to himself via two email accounts.

Some of the videos in the worst category A involved a boy aged ten.

Copeland was arrested on November 19 last year and his home and electronic devices were searched.

Police found no further images, but Copeland admitted dumping his laptop in a bin inChalkwell Park and his hard drive in a bin in Leigh Broadway, as well as disposing of five other computers in the past.

He also confessed to regularly looking at photos of boys aged 13 and older in “provocative poses” and chatting with paedophiles on internet forums.

Copeland was a former teacher at Thorpe Bay School – now Futures College – and a school governor at both St Thomas More High School in Westcliff and Our Lady of Lourdes Primary School in Leigh.

Marie Dineen, mitigating, told the court Copeland’s behaviour was sparked by the sudden death of his partner 15 years ago, which sent him into a depression during which he retreated to an online world.

She said: “Curiosity got the better of him and, as is so often the case, what he initially found shocking, he became almost desensitised to.

Judge Goodin indicated he would not be sending Copeland to prison, saying he had “no wish” to send him straight to custody.

He said: “I can’t imagine how that could be to anyone’s advantage at all.”

He added: “You are self-disgusted and your remorse, in my judgment, is real.”

Copeland will re-appear at the court on September 8.

Former teacher and magistrate pretended to be a 14-year-old online and had “obsession” with indecent child images

A perverted former teacher, school governor and magistrate hid a six-year obsession with downloading indecent images of young boys, a court heard.

Vincent Copeland, of Leigh Road, Leigh, admitted three counts of possessing indecent images of children at Ipswich Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

The 60-year-old, who also served on Southend Council’s children and lifelong learning scrutiny committee, fiddled nervously with his glasses as the charges were read out.

They related to seven images found on his email account from November 13, 2015, but the court heard his computer was unable to be searched because he had dumped it in a bin.

Colette Harper, prosecuting, said Copeland “had never touched a child” but he had shared images with other men online and pretended to be a 14-year-old boy for online chats about child sexual abuse

He had also arranged to meet up with a fellow paedophile.

She said: “Mr Copeland, at the time of these offences, was a magistrate and a school governor and a retired school teacher.

“The images were all found via the defendant’s email as part of an operation in relation to his email account.

“A warrant was executed on a high risk basis on November 19, 2015, at his address.”

Copeland was a former teacher at Thorpe Bay School – now Futures College – and a school governor at both St Thomas More High School in Westcliff and Our Lady of Lourdes Primary School in Leigh.

Miss Harper said a letter from Copeland to an unknown person was found at his home.

It said: “You know already, or will shortly find out, I’m in trouble for looking at illegal pornography online.

“I’m ashamed of this and will serve my punishment.

“I hope that you can forgive me.”

Copeland told police he had been downloading images of boys for “five or six years” and was interested in those aged 15 or over.

But the court heard the images and movies found, which range from the most serious category A to category C, involved boys who were between ten and 12 years old.

Miss Harper said: “He did have a laptop but when he found that his AOL account had been closed down he panicked and got rid of the computer and threw it in a bin in Leigh.”

Matthew Bone, defending, said the case was a “crying shame” and Copeland was prepared for his punishment.

He said: “Mr Copeland has been a dedicated public servant for many years.

“He fully cooperated with the police, made admissions, and he’s pleaded guilty at the very first opportunity.”

He will be sentenced at Ipswich Crown Court at a later date.

Conviction upheld for child abuse images ex-judge

Michael Shrimpton - Wendover

A former judge claims secret service agents planted child abuse images on his computer memory stick in a plot to discredit him.

Michael Shrimpton, an outspoken critic of foreign affairs who advised Chilean dictator General Pinochet, said officers switched the memory stick, which also contained a book he was writing on German intelligence practices

An appeal against his conviction heard his home in Jusons Glebe, Wendover was searched in April 2012 after he contacted the Ministry of Defence to warn them about an attempt he had uncovered to detonate a dirty nuclear bomb at the Olympics.

However, police instead arrested Mr Shrimpton and found a number of memory sticks which were bagged and labelled by officers.

Only one, which was found in a green glasses case next to Mr Shrimpton’s bed, was found to have contained deleted files, 40 of which were found by police specialists to be indecent images of young boys.

Mr Shrimpton, a barrister and former immigration judge who once advised Pinochet during his fight against extradition from Britain in the nineties, was sentenced to a three year supervision order, a five year Sexual Offences Prevention Order and was told to sign the Sex Offenders Register for possessing indecent images.

Representing himself, the 57 year old told the hearing at Aylesbury Crown Court sitting at Amersham that he believes intelligence services engaged a tactical interception system called G12, to monitor the search on his home and tamper with the items recovered.

He also claimed that he can prove his credentials as an intelligence specialist using a certificate gained when he was flown out to the USS Enterprise Navy aircraft carrier in 2006, and said that address books at his home contained direct numbers for world intelligence agencies.

Prosecuting, Richard Barton told Judge Karen Holt that he did not dispute that Mr Shrimpton had been aboard the USS Enterprise, but did not accept that it was as an intelligence specialist.

He also accepted that Mr Shrimpton’s own laptop computer was not the one used to download the indecent images onto the memory stick.

In court Mr Shrimpton said that he believed police did not have authority to take the laptop or memory stick, because his home is also used as his chambers for law work and could have contained legally sensitive information.

Speaking to the Bucks Herald outside court Mr Shrimpton said that he was ‘not worried’ about the case, and dismissed it as an effort to discredit him for being outspoken about key political issues as an intelligence specialist.

He said: “With every respect to the CPS and TVP this prosecution, based on an allegation of possession of a memory stick which has neither my fingerprints nor DNA on it, is a farce.

“TVP also admit my fingerprints are not on the laptop they have, which, absurdly, they claim is the one they unlawfully seized from my new home in April 2012.

“I wrote my new book Spyhunter on the original laptop. Spyhunter is a 330,000 word intelligence text, the writing of which involved at least a million keystrokes, i.e. the prosecution are alleging that a laptop which I touched at least a million times is mine even though there is not single fingerprint of mine on it, nor any of my DNA.”

The former chairman of Watermead Parish Council has been outspoken on issues including the search for Madeleine McCann, the 911 attacks, the war in Iraq, and international government involvement in the sinking of the Titanic.

Most recently he spoke out claiming that Malaysian Airlines Flight MH370 was shot down by a Chinese missile.

Former Government computer expert found dead one day before sentencing for child abuse images

Barry Kadleck

A FORMER government computer boffin facing jail for building up a library of sickening photos of child abuse killed himself hours before appearing in court.

Barry Kadleck, 61, who also served as a magistrate, was found dead at his North-East home the day before he was due to be at TeessideCrown Court.

He was warned to expect prison when he pleaded guilty at a hearing last month to making and possessing 4,000 indecent images of children.

The court would have heard that he was fixated on young girls aged around eight and stockpiled the harrowing photographs of children being sexually assaulted.

Court papers say that Kadleck, from Hexham, Northumberland, worked for the Government on secret IT contracts in Dubai and served as a magistrate in Newcastle.

The separated father-of-three was arrested at work last year, and told police: “I have been expecting it for some time, and it’s no more than I deserve.”

Investigations discovered thousands of images and videos on his mobile phone, laptop computer and on other storage devices around his house, the court heard.

Kadleck admitted that he had been looking at the images for the last seven years and told probation officials he was “fascinated and horrified” by them.

He was supposed to be appearing for sentence on Friday, but the court heard he was found dead at his home in what was suspected to be a suicide.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: “Police received a report at approximately 12.30pm on Thursday expressing concern for a man at an address in Hexham.

“Officers attended and paramedics were already working on a 61-year-old man, however he was later confirmed to be dead. It is believed that there was no third party involvement and a report is being prepared for the coroner.”

Kadleck was a senior systems specialist with computer giant IBM for more 20 years and also worked in the technology team involved in the football events at the 2012 Olympics.

He worked as a volunteer driver for a Hexham-based charity and most recently worked as a senior manager with STME Ltd who describe themselves as the Middle East’s leading IT solutions provider and systems integrator.

The Northern Echo understands he was headhunted by the Government to work on the confidential contract in the Gulf, and returned to the UK five years ago.

Kadleck, whose wife lived on North Tyneside, resigned from his delivery driver job for a supermarket and as a magistrate following his arrest in March last year.

The case – being heard on Teesside because of his links to courts on Tyneside – will be listed again this Friday when it is expected to be discontinued.
