Sex offender caught in sting in Barrow sentenced

A sex offender stung by a group of paedophile hunters after he contacted what he thought was a 12-year-old girl has been sentenced at crown court.

Neil Bamber avoided a prison sentence after he was convicted of attempting to a incite a girl into a sexual activity.

The moment an online anti-grooming group caught up to the 64-year-old in Barrow was shared online.

Bamber pleaded guilty to attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child and attempting to incite a child to engage in sexual activity.

The offences were said to have taken place between May 11 and June 9 2019.

He was said to have asked a 12-year-old to take intimate photos of herself.

Bamber was also said to have intentionally communicated with a girl he knew was under 16, asking her to take indecent photos and saying he wanted to engage in sexual intercourse with her.

A video shared following the sting by groups No More Secrets and Scales of Justice in 2019 showed the moment Bamber was confronted over his crimes.

In the video he is heard admitting contacting the girl.

Filming him, a member of the group said: “We’ve come to talk to you about your online activity with a 12-year-old… the 12-year-old you have been sending these messages to was this gentleman.”

The group member told viewers: “This man is absolutely vile.”

He said Bamber exchanged messages with the decoy on Facebook Messenger and then moved on to Whatsapp before he started to get ‘aggressive’.

The group said he told the decoy ‘you must always obey me’ and then asked her to take indecent photos of herself.

Asked why he had sent the messages, he said: “I felt sorry for her because she was getting picked on at school.

“I know it shouldn’t have turned sexual.

“She was getting bullied and I thought I would be a friend.

“I’m sorry for what I’ve done.”

He told the group he had never done it before and was not talking to any other children online.

Police were then seen to arrive and were provided with the evidence of messages by the groups.

At Preston Crown Court Bamber was jailed for a total of 20 months, suspended for two years.

He was also made the subject of a sexual harm prevention order and will be kept on the sex offenders’ register for 10 years.

The court also ordered the forfeiture and destruction of Bamber’s electronic devices.

On top of that he was told to complete 40 rehabilitation requirement days.

His address was previously given as no fixed abode.

Evidence obtained by paedophile hunters using decoy accounts can be used in criminal proceedings.

The Supreme Court ruled last year that gathering evidence in covert sting operations does not breach a person’s human rights.

Update: Taylor has now been released to Ormsgill, Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria

December 2018

Violent father repeatedly attacked baby boy

A violent father has been jailed after he repeatedly attacked his six-month-old baby boy leaving him injuries including leaving him permantly blinded in one eye.

Darren Taylor, 33 of Mill Bank, Barrow appeared at the Family Court Sessions at Preston Crown Court where he was found guilty of three separate counts of grevious bodily harm (GBH), assault, ill treatment or neglect of a child or young person.

The court was told that Taylor had repeatedly attacked and tormented the six-month-old baby boy starting in 2016 whilst being careful not to leave marks which would of alerted the mother of the abuse

However, on one particulour day, Taylor used blunt force trauma to cause a detached retina to the babies left eye which left the boy screaming in agony.

The boy was rushed to hospital, where along with the eye damage, doctors discovered further injuries including healing fractured ribs.

After regular visits to hospital, the doctors explained to the mother that due to the extent of the damage caused by Taylor when he struck the child, the boy would be permanently blinded, and due to a complication in the retina, the eye would have to be fully removed.

Coward Taylor denied the offences but was found guilty

Judge QC Knowles sentenced Taylor to four years imprisonment

Note: The boy suffered months of pain, stress, sleepless nights and anxiety due to the injuries, but has now made an amazing recovery and is currently waiting for a prosthetic eye to replace the temporary lens that was fitted.

Kendal sex offender had sick images showing child characters from The Simpsons

A convicted Kendal sex offender was caught with banned images showing child characters from television show The Simpsons engaging in sexual acts.‬

‪Carlisle Crown Court heard details of Mark Richard Bradley’s disturbing past as he was sentenced for another concerning crime.‬

‪In 1983, Bradley – now aged 57 – was punished for indecent assault, and in 2012 he received a five-year jail term for an offence of penetrative sexual assault.

He was made subject to the sexual offenders’ notification requirements for life, but received another prison sentence, in 2019, for flouting that order and illegal possession of a bladed article.‬

‪Prosecutor Brendan Burke told the court police searched Bradley’s home in connection with an unrelated enquiry on December 10, 2019.‬

‪“They seized an Acer computer which was later found to have 24 prohibited images on it,” said Mr Burke. “All of Simpsons character children engaging in sexual acts between themselves and with parents of that fictional family.‬

‪“In addition some concerning search criteria was discovered.‬”

Mr Burke added: “In interview the defendant claimed initially he was just testing the level of surveillance he was under by carrying out these searches.‬

‪“He went on to deny any sexual interest in children and to deny he obtained any kind of gratification from the images discovered.

“These claims are not regarded seriously by the Crown given his history.”‬

‪Bradley, of Gardiner Bank, Kendal, admitted possessing prohibited images of a child.‬

‪The sentencing judge, Recorder Eric Lamb, noted a ‘particularly helpful’ pre-sentence report prepared by a probation officer identified the level of risk presented by Bradley.

But it concluded the interests of society would be best served by the defendant complying with a lengthy community order.‬

‪After hearing submissions, Recorder Lamb imposed a 36-month community order.

Bradley must complete a sexual offending behaviour programme as directed, along with a rehabilitation requirement and a four-week night-time curfew.‬

Recorder Lamb told Bradley of the illegal material: “The nature of the images would fill any members of the public hearing about them with disgust.”

Gary Davies – Carlisle

‘Sadistic’ Carlisle stepdad forced children to beg for food

A stepfather who took “sadistic pleasure” in the cruelty he meted out to two young children has been jailed for nearly six years.

The horrific ordeal endured by the brother and sister – both of them pupils at a primary school in Carlisle – came to light after they told their teachers that they were afraid to go home because of what their mother’s boyfriend might do to them, Carlisle Crown Court heard.

The investigation that followed revealed how 37-year-old Gary Martin Davies subjected the terrified youngsters to a catalogue of cruel treatment. It included:

* Forcing them to beg for food.

* Compelling them to stare at a wall for hours at a time.

* Making them take freezing baths filled with ice cubes.

* Denying them food.

* And making them sleep without blankets on the bathroom floor.

The Cumbria Police detective who oversaw the investigation described the ordeal endured by the children as “harrowing” – and said that the tough  sentence handed down to Davies should serve as a warning to others who are tempted to mistreat children.

In court, prosecutor Tim Evans described how the children’s mother entered into a relationship with Davies and set up home with him in Carlisle.

“Matters came to light when the children reported to their teachers that they were frightened to go home because of what their stepfather might do to them,” said the barrister.

The teachers had already noticed various behaviour issues with the children – and in particular that they always seemed hungry, said Mr Evans.

The barrister outlined how over several months the children were subjected to various forms of cruelty.

“They were forced to the indignity of begging for their food,” said Me Evans.

“And it seems, from the reaction of the teachers, not given sufficient even when forced to beg.

“In the final week before police and social services became involved they were deprived of food almost in its entirety.”

Davies at times “dragged” the girl to the bathroom. He would swear at the children and he tried to humiliate the boy by ridiculing him. Davies also forced the children at times to “sleep in a cupboard,” said Mr Evans.

When making them have cold baths, he would add ice cubes and pour the water over their heads.

The court heard that Davies has a long history of violence, with several convictions for assault, the most recent ones being the most serious.

Mr Evans, who said Davies told the children’s mother she was not ‘punishing them properly, added: “These children were significantly more damaged after this defendant was involved than they were before.”

Jeff Smith, for Davies, who admitted two offences of child cruelty, said that not all the psychological harm suffered by the children could be blamed on Davies.

But the lawyer added: “He concedes that his behaviour was entirely inappropriate.

“He concedes that his life has not been filled with virtue. He knows he must be punished.”Jailing the defendant for five years and eleven months, Judge Nicholas Barker told Davies: “The grotesque ill-treatment which you caused these children I categorise as sadistic.

“You would cause them to stand against a wall for up to two hours, a couple of days a week.

“You caused them to sleep on the bathroom floor and if their mother wanted to cover them with a towel you visited retribution on her.

“You made them have cold baths and added ice cubes to it.” The judge went on: “It’s a catalogue of sadistic behaviour.

“You as an adult were well aware of the fear you were importing into those children. “You will be well aware of how they reacted to you – no doubt with utter terror. Given that you did not temper your behaviour, you must have obtained sadistic pleasure from it.” “Both children suffered significant mental health problems.”

The judge said his behaviour had not been a “momentary loss of control.” They were were premeditated acts carried out for the purpose of obtaining sadistic satisfaction.

The judge added: “It’s hard to see that you have offered genuine remorse, given that you required the children to be court-summonsed so their veracity could tested. You are a significant risk of serious harm to members of the public.”

Judge Barker imposed an extended licence period, which means the defendant will be at risk of recall to prison for an extra two years after the expiry of his determinate sentence, making a total sentence of seven years and eleven months.

Convicted sex offender flouted court order – and hid criminal past with false name

A convicted sex offender flouted a court order by spending time with a young Cumbrian woman and her nine-year-old sister, giving them a false name to hide his criminal past.

Jarod Tasdelen, 23, committed the offence after moving from Wiltshire to north Cumbria and landing a job at a livery stables, Carlisle Crown Court heard.

Brendan Burke, prosecuting, outlined how in 2016 the defendant had been jailed for a raft of child sex offences against girls aged 12 and 14, including engaging in sexual activity with a child.

After he moved to Cumbria, police visited him to confirm the terms of his Sexual Harm Prevention Order – which included him having NO contact with any child unless their guardian knew of his previous offences.

Mr Burke said Tasdelen, from Westbury, Wiltshire, began exchanging “flirtatious” messages with a woman whose nine-year-old sister came with her to the stables. He became “attentive” when she and her sister came to the stables, said Mr Burke.

“He was doing more than was necessary to assist, including offering her [the older sister] a job,” said Mr Burke.

He hid his real identity from the woman, giving a false name.

“He offered to give her nine-year-old sister riding lessons for free,” said Mr Burke, though he generally just led the horse and on one occasion he helped put on her body protector.

Tasdelen told the young woman he had slept with a 14-year-old but claimed he was “set up,” said Mr Burke. Later, he told the woman that he had been ‘kicked out’ of the property he had shared with a partner and suggested he and the young woman should elope to Scotland and start a farm.

At this stage the woman’s mother made enquiries, and found that the defendant had been using a false name.

He claimed that he had assumed the young woman’s older sister had told their mother about his past.

Tasdelen told police he had no sexual interest in the young girl. Paul Tweddle, defending, said he helped her with her riding because he feared she was at risk of falling.

The defendant pleaded guilty to flouting his Sexual Harm Prevention Order.Recorder Ciaran Rankin said that what happened had been a “deliberate breach” of the defendant’s Sexual Harm Prevention Order. There was an element of “targeting” involved, said the judge.

He imposed a year’s jail but suspended the sentence for two years, with 30 days rehabilitation activity, 120 hours of unpaid work, and a three month 9pm to 6am curfew.

When he appeared in court for his earlier offending, Tasdelen was 19. He had been charged with 16 counts of engaging in sexual activity with a child and four counts of causing a child to engage in a sex act, Swindon Crown Court heard.

The victims were said to be three girls, aged 12,14 and 14.
