A man who left his dog locked inside a filthy, faeces and urine stinking Peterhead home for around a week, with no fresh food and only toilet water to drink has been handed ‘one year supervision’
Sean Stewart, 24, has been banned from keeping animals for five years after causing his husky-type dog Tess distress, fear and mental suffering.
At Peterhead Sheriff Court, Sheriff Robert McDonald also placed him under supervision for one year.
The court heard that Tess was rescued on October 2, 2024, after a member of the public reported concerns. The caller believed Stewart had left the area on September 26 and had not returned.
Scottish SPCA inspectors and police forced entry that day. Inside, they found urine, faeces, scattered rubbish and chewed belongings.
Tess had no access to the outdoors. Several days’ worth of faeces had accumulated in a spare room, with more inside a carrier bag hanging from its door.
An open sack of dry dog food was found in the kitchen, but there was no fresh food. Her only available water source was the toilet.
Inspectors removed Tess that evening and left a letter and calling card urging Stewart to contact them.
He did not respond until October 8 — six days after the rescue.
When inspectors returned on October 10, the mess remained. Despite knowing they would attend, Stewart had made no effort to clear away the faeces.
Fiscal depute Anne Mann told the court that Stewart understood the charge against him but still wanted Tess back.
The five-year ban and year of supervision were welcomed by the Scottish SPCA.
Tess has since been rehomed — away from the locked doors, filthy floors and toilet bowl that had become her only source of water.
