A former Metropolitan Police officer who worked in the same command as rapists Wayne Couzens and David Carrick has been convicted of raping and sexually assaulting a woman he met through his police work.
Mark Tyrrell, 57, of Meltham, West Yorkshire, was found guilty at Southwark Crown Court of one count of rape, three counts of sexual assault and one count of perverting the course of justice.
The woman, who has lifelong legal anonymity, repeatedly told Tyrrell no before he raped her, the court heard.
Jurors were told that afterwards he acknowledged what he had done was rape.
Tyrrell served in the parliamentary and diplomatic protection command, where convicted rapists Couzens and Carrick also worked.
Concerns arose when officers visiting the woman’s home about an unrelated matter discovered Tyrrell hiding beside her bed.
He attempted to delete messages exchanged with her, leading to his conviction for perverting the course of justice.
The court also heard that he sent messages apologising
In one message, the court was told he said he was “sorry” for “being a sex offender” and “for ruining your life by being in it”.
Tyrrell had already admitted misconduct in a public office and a separate count of perverting the course of justice after persuading the woman to lie to police about why he was in her bedroom.
He maintained during his evidence that sexual activity had been consensual. Jurors acquitted him of 13 other charges, including a further count of rape.
Chief Superintendent Sara Leach condemned his conduct and said he had abused the trust of the victim.
The defendant, of Meltham, West Yorkshire, will be sentenced on 16 December.
Couzens kidnapped, raped and murdered a woman in 2021. He was later given a whole-life order.
Carrick, 51, who previously served as an armed officer in the Met, is serving 37 life sentences after attacking more than a dozen women.
