Policeman jailed over child porn

A police sergeant who had one of the largest collections of child pornography in the UK has been jailed for 15 months.

Anthony King, 49, from Northolt, north west London, admitted 13 counts of making indecent images of children.

He had an impeccable police record and received several commendations during his 26-year career. But there was a dark corner in his life – an obsession with child porn, said Judge Gerald Gordon at London’s Southwark Crown Court. He had 25,000 pictures of children from all over the world in his catalogued library obtained through the Internet.

His addiction was discovered after US authorities prosecuted an online company that specialised in the worldwide distribution of adult and child pornography, Peter Zinner told the court.

Customers paid with their credit cards.

“The FBI investigated the identity of various individuals worldwide by the credit card numbers. Two to three thousand UK citizens were identified and information passed to officers in this country,” said Mr Zinner.

The names were passed to Scotland Yard’s paedophile unit.

“Officers were shocked to see some were serving police officers. One was identified as the defendant, a police sergeant of 26 years service.”

He was in the process of destroying some of the evidence as he was arrested, said Mr Zinner.

“This is one of the largest private collections that an individual has had,” he added.
