Bandmaster jailed for sex abuse
A former bandmaster from North Yorkshire who sexually abused young boys over a 29-year period has been jailed for six years.
Ronald Woodward, 61, of Castle Hill, Richmond, well-known in the village of Reeth committed 22 offences against children between 1965 and 1994.
Judge Michael Taylor told Woodward his abuse had been “systematic and repeated” using a string of boys “one after another for your gratification”.
Woodward had admitted counts of indecent assault and gross indecency.
Outside Teesside Crown Court, one of Woodward’s victims said he was happy with the sentence but had “never hated anyone more in my life”.
The judge told the 61-year-old father he had abused nine boys “who looked up to you”.
“You systematically and repeatedly abused them one after another for your own sexual gratification,” he said.
Judge Taylor added that the consequences would “still live with some of these people”.
The former bandmaster of the Reeth Brass Band was told he would be placed on the sex offenders register for the rest of his life and forbidden from having unsupervised contact with anyone under the age of 16.
