Pervert jailed for haul of child abuse images

A DAD who downloaded child abuse films of ‘indescribable’ cruelty has been jailed.

Gregory Broadbent downloaded more than 5,500 sickening child abuse pictures and 15 films, some of which showed the rape of children and toddlers.

Former Telewest worker Broadbent admitted one count of possession of an indecent image of a child and seven counts of making indecent images of children.

Prosecuting at Newcastle Crown Court yesterday, Adrian Donkin said the dad-of-one had downloaded a catalogue of films and images between September and October 2005, by using file-sharing technology.

One film and eight images were rated as category five – the most serious rating of abuse.

The court heard Broadbent, 31, of Derby Street, Jarrow, also had more than 3,000 category one, more than 2,000 category two, 306 category three, and 65 category four films and images.

Paul Caulfield, defending, said Broadbent had lost everything.

“His relationship with his partner and son has been destroyed. He has lost his good name and his job for an act of folly,” he said.

Jailing him for 18 months, Judge Beatrice Bolton said she could not describe the terrible suffering the children – some aged just three and four years old – had endured in the films.

For each charge of possession and making images in the most serious category he was jailed for 18 months, to run concurrently, and ordered to sign the sex offenders’ register for 10 years.
