Man sentenced for kidnap and sexual assault

A man has been jailed for 18 years for multiple sexual assaults and the kidnap of a woman in Norwich.

Tenias Mungwari, aged 47 of Sleaford Green, Norwich has been sentenced for kidnap, sexual assault by penetration and two counts of sexual assault.

He appeared at Norwich Crown Court today (Friday 25 August 2023) after previously pleading not guilty to all offences. He was found guilty on the 30 June 2023 following a trial at Norwich Crown Court that lasted two weeks.

He was also handed an extended licence period of seven years and placed on the Sexual Offenders’ Register for life.

The sentencing follows an incident on 30 October 2022, where a woman was walking home in the early hours of the morning from a night out in Norwich City Centre.

The woman was approached by Mungwari in his vehicle, kidnapped and taken back to his address. She was then sexually assaulted.

The woman fled the address and sought assistance from members of the public who managed to get her home safely. Extensive CCTV enquiries tracked the woman’s movements and identified the vehicle that she was taken in. This vehicle was registered to Mungwari.

Mungwari came across the woman by chance as he was circling Norwich City Centre in his vehicle.  CCTV showed that Mungwari had stopped at a red traffic light when he turned his head and saw the woman walking in the other direction.

He was then seen to turn his vehicle around and follow the woman in his vehicle before kidnapping her and taking her to his address, where he subjected her to serious sexual assaults over a period of several hours.

Mungwari was also sentenced for having a sexual relationship with a female patient suffering with mental illness that he had cared for.

He was found guilty of three counts of engaging in sexual activity with a female suffering with a mental disorder at Norwich Crown Court on 13 June 2023 having committed these offences in October 2020.
