Man jailed for rape in the City

A man has been sentenced to six years and nine months at Inner London Crown Court for raping a woman in the City of London.

Eritrean Awet Solomon, 24, of Bath Road, West Drayton, was charged with rape of a woman in the early hours of New Years Day.

He also pleaded guilty to strangulation and actual bodily harm.

The victim contacted the police and an investigation was launched. Solomon was arrested, charged and remanded in custody within 36 hours of the report.

The victim alighted a bus on Mansell Street and walked towards Whitechapel High Street. She was dragged in to an alleyway, beaten and then subjected to a violent rape by Solomon who was a stranger to her.
