Rapist jailed after woman dials 999 during attack

An emergency call handler heard a woman who was being raped pleading with the attacker to stop after she managed to dial 999 from his phone during the attack

Fernando Camutari was arrested in the early hours of 8 June 2019, mere minutes after attacking a young woman he had lured back to his house after a night out.

The quick-thinking woman, aged 21, called 999 from Camutari’s phone, while he forced himself on her, violently raping and sexually assaulting her.

The woman could be heard on the line, pleading with Camutari to stop.

Officers raced to the address on Mordaunt Road in Sheffield and arrested the 41-year-old immediately, arriving as he and his victim were stepping outside the property.

Camutari denied the allegations; he first insisted the woman had not been inside the address, despite CCTV footage showing them entering together and then exiting together minutes later.

He also denied that any sexual activity had taken place, despite forensic evidence proving otherwise.

Following his initial arrest, Camutari was charged on 17 September 2020 with rape and two counts of sexual assault.

His trial ran for four days with the jury returning guilty verdicts on all charges

Following the verdict, he was immediately sentenced to time prison.

He was sentenced to six years and nine months for rape, and three years for each charge of sexual assault to run concurrently to his sentence for rape.
