Matthew Wood struck up a conversation with somebody he thought was the father of a seven-year-old girl. He said he would like to have sex with the child and later sent the officer his collection of hundreds of indecent pictures of children he had downloaded from the internet. Some showed the worst kind of abuse of young children, Exeter Crown Court was told. Wood, who initially claimed he had no sexual interest in children, has now been convicted of six offences of making and distributing indecent images. He was given a suspended sentence. Senior judges have recently highlighted a prison overcrowding crisis that tipped the balance in favour of a suspended sentence with rehabilitation. Prosecutor Mr Nigel Wraith said officers started an undercover operation in November of 2021, setting up a fake profile on social media. Wood enthusiastically replied, asking about the ‘child’ and moving the conversation to another platform. He asked where the child lived and requested nude photos, the prosecutor said. Wood sent a number of indecent images of children and then a link to an online store and folder containing hundreds more More than 100 were in the most serious category of abuse and depicted children of all ages. Police executed a warrant at his address in January of last year. He denied having a sexual interest in children and said he used the app to talk to people because he was lonely. The 39-year-old, of Bridespring Walk, pleaded guilty to six offences at court. Judge David Evans said Wood has shared hundreds of the “most repellent kind of images”. He accepted the defendant is genuinely remorseful and may now realise that harm caused by his behaviour. A probation report assessed Wood as a low risk of reoffending and suitable for rehabilitation. The judge said a recent Court of Appeal ruling about pressures on the prison estate tipped the balance in favour of a suspended sentence. Wood must do 40 rehabilitation days with probation. He was made subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order restricting his use of the internet in future. Share this:TweetLike this:Like Loading... Related
