Torquay chef jailed for child sex assault

A chef from Torquay has been jailed for sexually abusing a child.

Martin Smith, aged 36, was convicted of four charges during a trial at Exeter Crown Court in February.

He returned to court on Friday (April 21) to be sentenced for the offences.

He was locked up for eight years with an extra 12 months on licence when he is released.

The offences came to light when the child told an adult that Smith had touched her sexually. He denied doing anything wrong but the jury found him guilty after hearing the evidence.

Smith. of no fixed abode, was found guilty of four out of six offences at the trial, including assaulting a child under 13 by penetration.

Judge David Evans said the abuse happened on numerous occasions. He told Smith: “It is clear you have caused very significant psychological trauma. You are still denying the offences.”

He said there was little mitigation available to the defendant to allow him to reduce the sentence.

Smith must serve two thirds of the eight-year sentence before he can be considered for release by the parole board.
