Isle of Wight man admits sexual assault on Southern Vectis bus

A child told a stranger to leave his mum alone when he witnessed her be sexually assaulted on a bus.

Adam Thompson had reached over and grabbed the woman’s breast while she was sitting in the front row of the top deck with her young son.

Thompson, 42, of Hookes Way, Newport, appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates’ Court for sentencing last Friday (August 19).

He admitted sexual assaulting the woman on March 22.

Liz Miller, prosecuting, said the woman was on the Southern Vectis Route 3 from Ventnor, when Thompson began talking to her son and started being inappropriate, telling him some girls have ‘nice arses’.

He was leaning over the woman, and called her a ‘silly cow’ when she tried to move away.

She faked making a phonecall to her husband to attempt to get rid of Thompson.

However Thompson stroked the woman’s breast, which upset her son, who told him to leave his mum alone.

The victims got off at Newport Bus Station and went to McDonald’s because they thought it would be a safe place, but he followed them in.

Staff there phoned police and he was arrested in the restaurant.

Thompson was given a three-year community order to include a 120-day alcohol abstinence programme.

He was placed on the Sexual Offenders’ Register for five years.

He must pay £85 court costs and a £95 surcharge.

In 2017, his ex-girlfriend Laura Harding was convicted of sending intimate pictures of herself to ‘paedophile hunters’ posing as 13-year-old girl.

She admitted two charges of engaging in sexual communication with a child
