Pervert teacher is spared prison

Former Deyes High School assistant head Dr Clive Upton has been spared a jail sentence after admitting taking indecent pictures of young girls.

Upton, 51, of Dunbabin Road, Childwall used a digital camera to take photographs of girls exercising in a school gym, Liverpool Crown Court heard.

A regular churchgoer who had worked at the Maghull school for 30 years, Upton pleaded guilty to two offences of attempting to take an indecent photograph of a child between November 2002 and April 13 last year.

He also pleaded guilty to nine offences of downloading indecent images of children between May 1, 2003 and April 13 last year.

Brendan Carville, prosecuting, told the court the chemistry teacher was arrested after a man from the Midlands was caught distributing indecent images of children.

He said Upton’s e-mail was found on his computer and when detectives examined Upton’s PC they found 260 indecent images of children who were aged between eight and 13.

When Upton was interviewed by police he said he used to swap pornography on the internet with other like-minded people and those images had been unsolicited

Judge Bryn Holloway said he had thought about sending Upton to prison but said he believed Upton has recognised his problems and a community order for three years was justified.

Upton was ordered to take part in the sex offenders’ treatment programme and must sign the Sex Offenders’ Register for five years.

He was also banned from working with children for five years.
