Former soldier jailed for abuse of children and woman
A former soldier from North Devon has been jailed for the depraved sexual abuse of two children and a young woman
Albert Day, commonly known as Peter Day, had an ‘obsession with sexual offending against children’.
He told his victims the abuse would be ‘our secret’ and they would not be believed if they revealed the truth.
When the offences did come to light in the 1990s Day was let off the hook and an investigation dropped.
It was only in 2018, after he was arrested for possessing more than 1,000 images of sexual abuse against children and extreme pornography involving animals, that a new investigation was launched.
He was found guilty of multiple offences at a trial in June. His victims said that after decades of not being believed ‘justice had been done’.
Day returned to Exeter Crown Court today [July 15] for sentence.
He was jailed for 12 years
The judge said the victims had carried the psychological and sexual harm with them for decades and his obsession with depraved child abuse had endured to the present day.
Day, of Moory Meadow, Combe Martin, was convicted of one charge of rape, one indecency with a child, and eight indecent assaults.
He also admitted possessing thousands of images of children being sexually abused.
The offences against the three victims dated back to the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s.
Prosecutor Mr Richard Crabb read victim personal statements by two of the woman. One said she still felt let down that the original police investigation had not brought Day to justice sooner.
“Reopening of the case has been harder than the first time,” she said. “There’ll always be triggers in my life that bring the terrible time back. I have to learn not to let you ruin my life more than you have already done.
“It took 32 years but the hurt and pain will never go away. The situation is now turned around and I hope and prey you get the sentence you deserve.”
Another victim said it had been hard reliving a time in her life she had tried hard to forget but she had found the strength to do so. “Finally after all these years justice has been done. Finally you will get what you deserve.”
Day was arrested after boasting in an online chat room that he had had sex with a six-year-old child. He later admitted that was just fantasy but admitted having ‘nasty stuff’ on his computer.
Police found more than 600 movies and images depicting the most serious kind of sexual abuse against children, as well as hundreds of other indecent images, animal pornography, and sexual cartoons.
He said he found child abuse pictures ‘horrible and exciting’ and needed help.
The court was told Day had left the army in 1979. He was a floor-layer for many years. In recent years he has worked a caretaker and site maintenance man.
