Paedophile ex-soldier serving first prison term at the age of 73

A former soldier sexually assaulted two young girls telling one of them “let’s have a play” as he did so.

Derby Crown Court heard how paedophile pensioner John Burrows touched one victim on her private parts during his catalogue of horrific abuse.

His sentencing hearing was told how he also indecently exposed himself.

And in a victim impact statement his second victim told how she “always thinks ‘why me?'” and is taking antidepressants to cope with her mental trauma.

Jailing the defendant for a total of eight years, Recorder Adrian Reynolds said: “You are 73 and prior to this offending had never been in trouble before.

“Having looked at your life it has been a positive one – you were in the Army for a long time and worked all your life.

“You looked after your ailing wife until she died in 2015.

“But on the other side of the story are your victims, who you treated as objects of your sexual desires.

“You took advantage of them shamelessly and blinded yourself to the harm you inflicted.

“You have shown no empathy for those girls at all.

“You sunk into an absolute pit in your later life.”

Gary Short, prosecuting, said the abuse took place in Creswell.

He said it began on both girls when they were under the age of sexual consent.

Mr Short said it was not until 2019 that the victims both plucked up the courage to tell what had happened to them.

He said: “He rubbed his groin against one victim, touched her breasts, touched (the private parts) of the second victim and said ‘let’s have a play’.

Burrows, of Manse Avenue, Creswell pleaded guilty to a number of counts of sexual assault against the two victims.

In the impact statement, the victim continued: “I can’t have a relationship because I get flashbacks and my ex-partner finished with me because of this, every time he touched me I cried.”

Mr Short said: “When he was arrested, in 2019, as he was taken into custody the defendant said ‘I am going to tell the truth, I touched her’.”

As well as the jail sentence, Recorder Reynolds handed Burrows a lifetime sexual harm prevention order and placed him on the sex offender register, also for life.
