Paedophile lured girls into his flat with colouring books and pencils

A pensioner who lured girls to his flat with colouring books before sexually abusing them has finally been jailed.

Detectives said no prison sentence will ever ‘take away the pain and suffering’ caused by Phillip Wood.

The 75-year-old, from Wood End, Warwickshire, carried out the sickening assaults over a 10-year period.

He attacked three girls when they were aged between five and 12-years-old, at locations across the West Midlands.

Wood was arrested by Warwickshire Police after one of the victims came forward in 2018.

During the trial, prosecutor Rebeca Wade said Wood targeted his first victim after meeting her mother while he was living in the Quinton area of Birmingham.

Wood, who worked as a delivery driver, took her to his mother’s home where he simulated intercourse with her.

He also abused her in other locations, including his work vehicle.

She was aged between seven and 11 at the time of the assaults, and she was too afraid to tell anyone what was happening.

As an adult she told her husband and, in 2009, reported it to the police.

No further action was taken until another of Wood’s victims went to the police in 2018.

That woman revealed she was about nine and playing near Wood’s flat in Glenville Avenue, when on more than one occasion he persuaded her to go inside.

He would then put his hand down her trousers and touch her indecently.

She had tried to report it in 2009, but the court heard she was turned away from Tamworth Police Station and told to report it to Warwickshire Police.

The woman did not make a further report until 2018.

Wood’s third victim was aged about seven and was also playing near Wood’s flat in the late 1990s when he asked her in, telling her he had some colouring books and pencils she could use.

Once inside, he exposed himself and made her touch his genitals.

He then gave her the colouring books and warned her not to tell anyone or her family would find her dead in the woods.

After a complex three-year investigation, he was charged with 34 offences in connection with three victims.

Wood was found guilty of 28 counts of indecent assault of a girl under 14, and five counts of gross indecency with a child under 14.

He was jailed for a total of 23 years at Warwick Crown Court on Friday.
