Married paedophile tried to meet a ’13-year-old girl’ and sent sick child abuse pictures to ‘like-minded’ men
A married paedophile who tried to meet up with a ’13-year-old girl’ he had groomed, and sent sick child abuse pictures to ‘like-minded’ men, has been jailed.
Shaun Gillings, 49, believed he was meeting up with a young girl named ‘Daisy’ in a car park in Eccles.
He had been chatting to the ’13-year-old’ for over a month on Kik, an instant messaging app, before arranging to meet her for sexual contact.
The grandad had also sent her explicit pictures of himself, Minshull Street Crown Court heard.
But Gillings was in fact being snared by a police officer posing as ‘Daisy’ and was arrested in January when he showed up at their meeting place.
He now been jailed for three years and four months.
Prosecutor Nicholas Clarke told the court how Gillings’ offending took place over a period from October 2019 to January this year.
“On December 13 last year, an undercover police officer calling herself ‘Daisy’ sent a message to this defendant on a Kik account”, Mr Clarke said
“Her message was asking for her calculator back. He replied saying he was 49-years-old and said she must have got the wrong person.
“She said from the outset that she was a 13-year-old girl.
“The conversation continued through the following month. Mr Gillings started out by suggesting that she looked a lot older than 13 and said she looked ‘absolutely stunning’ in her photo.
“The conversation moves onto sexual matters and whether or not she has a boyfriend and whether she likes older men.”
Gillings sent a picture of his penis to ‘Daisy’ and an explicit video.
He asked her not to share their conversation or anything about their relationship with other people.
In January, he suggested they meet so that he could give her vouchers or money for a Christmas present but was snared by police when he arrived.
Officers seized his mobile phone and an examination of it revealed he had been in similar conversations online with other ‘girls’ who he believed to be under the age of 15.
In one conversation, he told a 15-year-old girl that he would pay her £50 for ‘sexual favours’.
Officers also found a gallery of pictures of children being abused on his phone and evidence of conversations with other ‘like-minded individuals’.
He sent explicit pictures of children to at least three other paedophiles and discussed his desire to abuse one of their daughters who was only 10-years-old.
Police found 174 indecent images on his phone – 22 of which were classed as being in the most serious category.
Defending, Rachel Shenton said her client – who has no previous convictions – is ‘ashamed’ of his offending.
She said he was working as a delivery driver at the time which left him ‘isolated and bored’.
“It began out of boredom and curiosity and he said he initially felt like he was in an unreal or fantasy world”, Ms Shenton told the court.
“The defendant has lost absolutely everything in his life.
“His wife is filing for divorce, he lost his two daughters and has had no contact with his grandson.
“He lost his job and his reputation and is well aware that he destroyed everything for himself.”
Gillings, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to four counts of distributing indecent images; three counts of downloading indecent images; six counts of attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child; two count of attempting to cause a child to view an image of sexual activity; one count of attempting to meet a child following sexual grooming.
Sentencing him to three years and four months imprisonment, Judge John Potter said the defendant was a ‘committed paedophile’.
The judge said: “You pursued a sexual interest in female children aged between 13 and 15.
“The offences you committed portray you as a committed paedophile.
“This offending is so serious that only an immediate custodial sentence is appropriate.
“You remain in denial about your offending behaviour.”
Gillings was also made subject of a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for 10 years and must sign the sex offenders register for life.
