Covid 19 claims life of depraved paedophile

A convicted paedophile who carried out a string of sex attacks on young girls has died after testing positive for coronavirus.

Alwyn George Evans  from Pontygwaith was serving an indeterminate sentence at HMP Usk, Maryport Street, Usk, when he began exhibiting symptoms of the virus,

Evans was jailed for 18 months in 2005 for five counts of indecent assault on a female under the age of 14. Five years later, he was again behind bars for five counts of assault by penetration.

In the latter, he was convicted of rape, 16 counts of indecent assault and five of indecency with a child between 1998 and 2003.

Two girls, one aged between eight and 11 and the other between seven and 12, were subjected to a campaign of serious sexual assault by Evans.

At an inquest opening hearing on Monday, a coroner heard 75-year-old Evans tested positive for Covid-19 and was taken to Neville Hall Hospital on April 14, 2020.

Coroners’ court officer Paul Richardson said the inmate refused to be ventilated and died on April 17.

His medical cause of death was given as Covid-19 contributed to by pneumoconiosis.
